VALENTINE'S Day is done for another year. But there's another "celebration" for couples taking place today. Here's the lowdown on Steak and B*****b Day 2019... When is Steak and B*****b Day 2019 and where did it come from? Steak and B*****b day is a satirical holiday that started life as a meme online. It was supposedly created in the US as a "male response to Valentine's Day" and it is celebrated a month later, on March 14 (TODAY). The idea of the day gained so much momentum that now some have dubbed it the unofficial "Valentine's Day for men". Punters can now even purchase Steak and B*****b Day cards from some stores. According to the "official" Steak and B*****b Day website, the day is there to highlight how "men work hard to satisfy their lovers on Valentine’s Day, and, given their ebullient dedication, Steak and BJ Day 2019 is an opportunity to repay the favour". It says "men feel a tad left out, they're just too proud or too embarrassed to admit it". The date for the day in … [Read more...] about Steak and B*****b Day 2019 is TODAY! MANY think of Lent as a time to give up something, such as chocolate or booze, but it is also an important event in the Christian calendar. Let’s take a closer look at why it is so special and why people give up one of their vices during this time. What is Lent? Lent is the six week period leading up to Easter Sunday. The actual length is 46 days – however, 40 of these are fasting days and six are Sundays. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter". The period of Lent is seen as a time of solemn observance and preparation for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Jesus at Easter. From its start on Ash Wednesday until its conclusion on Easter Sunday, Lent has been a traditional time for fasting or giving something up or abstinence. The word Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means "spring". The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and … [Read more...] about Lent 2019 starts TODAY – What is it, when does it end, and why do we give things up during the period?
"I often feel a discomfort, a kind of embarrassment, when I explain elementary-particle physics to laypeople. It all seems so arbitrary - the ridiculous collection of fundamental particles, the lack of pattern to their masses." -Leonard Susskind When it comes to physics, there are a tremendous number of unsolved problems that seem to mandate the existence of a new particle. These include the dark matter problem, the matter-antimatter asymmetry problem, the massive neutrino problem and the strong-CP problem. Moreover, these particles required cannot be part of the Standard Model: they must lie beyond it. Image credit: DESY at Hamburg. Yet not only have detectors and colliders failed to turn up anything new despite 50 years of searches, but most models that would solve these problems are theoretically doomed from the start. Constraints on what new physics could do from big bang nucleosynthesis and the lack of observed flavor-changing neutral currents forbid almost all of the … [Read more...] about Why is it so hard to find a new particle? AS the Christmas memories fade, all we are left with are a hammered bank account, a bulge around the waist, gloomy weather and a return to work after weeks of partying. These factors all come together in a perfect storm for a single day believed to be the most depressing of the year which has been dubbed 'Blue Monday'. Here's the rather sad lowdown... What is Blue Monday? It is calculated using a series of factors in a (not particularly scientific) mathematical formula. The factors are: the weather, debt level (specifically, the difference between debt and our ability to pay), the amount of time since Christmas, time since failing our new year's resolutions, low motivational levels and the feeling of a need to take charge of the situation. It was originally conceived by a PR company but has now become an annual event. When is Blue Monday 2018? It's been calculated that Blue Monday 2018 was on January 15 using the formula below. The date is generally reported as falling … [Read more...] about What is Blue Monday 2018, why is it called ‘the most depressing day of the year’ and where did it originate?
