Get the Better newsletter. SUBSCRIBE Oct. 31, 2018 / 10:18 AM GMT By Nicole Spector When I was diagnosed with major depression at 22, I was too deep within the fog of the illness to much care that finally, after years of struggling, I had an answer as to why I felt so impenetrably bad, and that with treatment, I could improve. Later, once I began therapy and started taking antidepressants, I began to feel better, which resulted both in relief and a strange sort of guilt. I was grateful to be improving, surely, but remorseful that for years I didn’t seek medical help and that I had discounted even severe symptoms as the natural effects of just being in a rut, or of being stressed out. That I waited so long to take action is not unusual, and my delay was likely a result of both misinformation and lack of information altogether. “According to recent studies, about 1 in 5 Americans meet criteria for a diagnosis of major depressive disorder,” says Erlanger A. … [Read more...] about Am I depressed or just sad? Once a week, early on Sunday mornings, I quietly slope off to a railway arch not far from where I live. I go there to do something secret. Something embarrassing. Something I try to keep from my friends, family and the universe in general. I see a personal trainer. For a full 30 minutes, a man called Sapan will encourage me to do press-ups and chin-ups and lift weights while gazing at my own big, red, soggy, quivering body in a full-length mirror. Camp, hi-NRG dance music echoes around the empty gym space as he drinks a latte and chats about football and I do my very best not to be sick. As soon as we’re done, I’ll quickly leave, head down, like a punter coming out of a dirty book shop in Soho. But I will, without fail, be back the following week. Why am I doing this? And why do I feel so sheepish about it? When I started I told myself that I was employing a personal trainer simply because I was getting deep into my 30s, and that it was sensible — responsible, even … [Read more...] about This is why Ben Machell keeps his personal trainer a secret
Get the Better newsletter. SUBSCRIBE I love matcha, there’s no denying it. Ever since I discovered the powdered green tea when I first moved to New York City back in 2015, I’ve kept my eyes peeled for cafes that offer the delicious Japanese drink. So, it’s no wonder that when I discovered not one, but two, coffee shops next to my new office that carry the Instagram-worthy sip, I became a frequent consumer. And by frequent, I mean every day. As soon as I woke up (often tired despite trying to snooze for the recommended eight hours each night), I looked forward to ordering my favorite coconut matcha latte at Ground Central, a beloved NYC coffee chain, to wake me up. With matcha being widely known as one of the most desirable ingredients among the Instagram-happy wellness set, and hearing that coconut milk was considered by some to be a healthier alternative to cow’s milk, I felt like I was making a healthy decision by starting each and every day for the past … [Read more...] about I gained 30 pounds by jumping on this ‘healthy’ food trend
By Gabrielle Bokat as told to Rachael Schultz Jun 12, 2018 Courtesy of Gabrielle Dawn I continued to work out throughout my pregnancy, but still managed to gain 47 pounds. It’s totally normal to put weight on when pregnant, but considering that I’m only 5'2", that was a lot more than expected. So after my son was born, I was anxious to get my body in shape, and feel like myself again. The only problem: I just couldn’t find the drive or motivation to stick with anything at that time, whether it was breastfeeding or exercising. Despite entering the greatest phase of my life—motherhood—I was struggling deep inside.Like most new moms, I posted pictures of everyday moments with my son—from his baptism to just the cute things babies do. A lot of the time, I was in these pictures as well, but avoided being front and center. One day, though, I saw there was a new DM in my inbox. It was filled with nasty comments from a family member’s … [Read more...] about ‘I Wanted Abs To Prove My Cyberbully Wrong—But I Gained So Much More Than That’
