Today, Nike announces the release of a new proprietary foam midsole technology called Nike React. The very first shoe to feature React will be the Epic React Flyknit running shoe. It’s a sleek little number (available February 22), with a simple, knit upper that sits atop a single layer of extra thick React foam. In a trend that’s been sweeping the running shoe industry, Nike is centering all its attention and fanfare on the properties of the foam itself, rather than highlighting other individual parts of the shoe.“React is our most complete foam ever,” says Ernest Kim, footwear innovation director at Nike. Kim geeks out, praising the ride this new foam delivers. “You not only get great energy return—13 percent greater than Lunarlon—but [you also get] a much softer experience as well,” he says. For a runner who wants a shoe that feels springy and light, but that can still hold up through plenty of miles, Kim feels that Nike nailed it with … [Read more...] about Nike’s New React Foam Confirms Cushy Shoes Are Here to Stay. Which designer shoes are most comfortable
We obsess over which athletic shoes are best for our feet, yet most of us throw on generic $10 flip flops without a second thought. They may be a summer staple, but podiatrists say your basic thong sandal can do serious damage to your feet. “Your basic flip flop provides minimal stability and orthopedic support of the arch, heel and forefoot,” says Rock G. Positano, D.P.M., podiatrist and director of the Non-Surgical Foot and Ankle Service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Because of this, plodding around in an unsupportive pair can actually create problems bad enough to sideline you. “The feet are the body’s major shock absorbing system, so without supportive shoes, this can exacerbate knee, hip, and low back pain,” he adds. Here are seven common ways you could be hurting your knees:And if you have a high or flat arch, wearing unsupportive sandals can create overuse injuries, like Achilles, heel, or forefoot pain. The other issue: … [Read more...] about 11 Deliciously Comfortable Sandals to Treat Your Feet Post-Ride
Count Mavic among the growing cadre of cycling companies that are pushing all in on the enduro phenomenon. Already this year, the French brand introduced clothes designed for this burgeoning all-mountain genre. Now add to that a pair of enduro shoes and a new wheel-and-tire system that is available in 26-inch or 27.5-inch versions. Mavic calls both new product groups Crossmax Enduro. Mavic designed the shoes, yellow with black accents, to be comfortable when worn all day (and walked in from time to time), but also rugged enough and stiff enough to provide efficient power transfer and to stand up to the rigors of burly trail riding and enduro racing. To keep your feet securely in place, Mavic paired its Ergo Lite ratchet with a quick-lace system that’s concealed underneath an oversized Velcro flap. A cushy tongue and soft inner liner enhance comfort. The shoe also features a grippy outsole, a reinforced toe cap, and neoprene ankle cuff. I haven’t tested these … [Read more...] about First Look: Mavic Unveils New Enduro Wheels, Tires and Shoes
Fi'zi:k has always striven to improve the way your body interacts with your bicycle through its premium saddles, bar tape, and shoes. Personalizing your shorts, says Product Manager Luca Viano, was just the next natural step. At the Eurobike trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, we got an in-depth look at the company’s first apparel offering—the LINK Bib Short. Start planning your best year of riding yet with the 2017 Bicycling Calendar! To understand LINK, you first have to understand Fi'zi:k’s saddle-fitting system. In 2008, with the help of Roger Kram, PhD, a cyclist and physiology researcher at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Fi'zi:k derived a system of matching riders to their ideal saddle shapes according to their flexibility. The system, called Spine Concept, segments riders into three general categories. “Snakes” are most flexible; when they sit on the saddle, their back is able to arch so that their pelvis … [Read more...] about Has Fi’zi:k Created The Most Comfortable Cycling Bib Short?
"Okay, gang, follow me!" And with that simple command, Danny Abshire—all five feet, six inches of running-shoe showmanship—takes off through the streets of Boulder, Colorado, with 40 or so runners of all sizes and shapes and PRs following behind. Most of them don't know each other, or the man they're trying to keep up with. The only thing they have in common is the shoes on their feet, and for that they can thank this fast-moving salesman. At first glance, the shoes look like any ordinary trainers, except for the flashy neon color schemes. But those attending this Saturday-morning running clinic soon realize that the Newton—as the shoe is called, and which Abshire first started developing 20 years ago—is nothing like what they've previously worn. It weighs about a third less than a conventional running shoe but is not—as Abshire likes to point out—a so-called "minimal" shoe, the kind with the barely there sole. While Newton's heel-to-toe pitch is … [Read more...] about The Shoe Believer
