South Africa In New Surge Of COVID-19 From Versions Of Omicron

May 16, 2022 by www.boldsky.com

Home Health Wellness Wellness on May 16, 2022 South Africa is experiencing a surge of new COVID-19 cases driven by two omicron sub-variants, according to health experts. For about three weeks the country has seen increasing numbers of new cases and somewhat higher hospitalisations, but no increase in severe cases and deaths, said Professor Marta Nunes, a researcher at Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Analytics at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. "We're still very early in this increased period, so I don't want to really call it a wave," Nunes said. "We are seeing a slight, a small increase in hospitalizations and really very few deaths." South Africa's new cases have gone from an average of 300 per day in early April to about 8,000 per day this week. Nunes says the actual number of new cases is probably much higher because the symptoms are mild and many who get sick are not getting tested. South Africa's new … [Read more...] about South Africa In New Surge Of COVID-19 From Versions Of Omicron

Covid-19 Virus Is Not Viable On Cash Banknotes, Study Finds

May 14, 2022 by www.boldsky.com

Home Health Wellness Wellness on May 14, 2022 The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, becomes almost immediately nonviable if deposited on a cash banknote, according to a study. The research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, suggests that the use of credit and debit cards over cash as a COVID-19 prevention measure is not advisable. The researchers found that the virus shows greater stability on plastic money cards, with the live virus still being detected 48 hours after initial deposition. However, no viable virus was detected on either cash or card that was randomly sampled in the study, the researchers said. "Early in the pandemic, we had this massive outcry for businesses to stop using cash; all these businesses just followed this advice and said OK we are credit card only," said study author Richard Robison, a professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) in the US. "I thought, 'Wait a minute, … [Read more...] about Covid-19 Virus Is Not Viable On Cash Banknotes, Study Finds

Trained Sniffer Dogs May Accurately Detect COVID Infected Airport Passengers: Study

May 18, 2022 by www.boldsky.com

Home Health Wellness Wellness on May 18, 2022 Trained sniffer dogs can accurately detect airport passengers infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a study published in the journal BMJ Global Health. This method of detection is likely to be valuable, not only in the early stages of a pandemic when other resources might not yet be available, but also to help contain an ongoing pandemic, the researchers said. A key finding was that the dogs were less successful at correctly identifying the Alpha variant as they had been trained to detect the wild type. This just goes to show how good dogs are at distinguishing between different scents, they said. It is thought that dogs are able to detect distinct volatile organic compounds released during various metabolic processes in the body, including those generated by bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. The researchers from the University of … [Read more...] about Trained Sniffer Dogs May Accurately Detect COVID Infected Airport Passengers: Study

Home Pregnancy parenting Baby Baby on May 21, 2022 Africa was declared free of wild poliovirus just two years ago. Now, it's got a new outbreak on its hands. Mozambique reported its first case since 1992 on Wednesday, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It's the second case to be detected on the continent this year, after Malawi reported Africa's first case in five years in February. The case in Mozambique was detected in a child in the country's northeastern Tete province, according to the WHO. Like the case reported earlier this year in Malawi, genomic sequencing shows it is linked to a strain that circulated in Pakistan in 2019. A nationwide vaccination campaign launched in Malawi in March targeting children aged 5 years and younger. Mozambique also recently carried out its own campaign, the WHO said. "The detection of another case of wild polio virus in Africa is greatly concerning, even if it's … [Read more...] about Mozambique Sees First Wild Polio Case Since 1992; Pandemic May Have Caused Children To Miss Polio Vaccination

Home Health Wellness Wellness on May 20, 2022 We all know a few of those lucky people who, somehow, have managed to avoid ever catching COVID. Perhaps you're one of them. Is this a Marvel-esque superpower? Is there any scientific reason why a person might be resistant to becoming infected, when the virus seems to be everywhere? Or is it simply luck? More than 60% of people in the UK have tested positive for COVID at least once. However, the number of people who have actually been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is thought to be higher. The calculated rate of asymptomatic infections varies depending on the study, though most agree that it's fairly common. But even taking into account people who have had COVID and not realised it, there is still likely a group of people who have never had it. The reason why some people appear immune to COVID is one question that has persisted throughout the … [Read more...] about Haven’t Had Covid-19 Yet? It Could Be More Than Just Luck
