There has been, and continues to be, disagreement among psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals regarding the reliability of repressed or recovered memories. Many psychotherapists still debate treatment issues, including ethical issues and clinical techniques and practice. On one hand, studies indicate that significant numbers of abuse victims report a loss of memory of the abuse, at least at some point in time. On the other hand, research has also shown that false memories can be implanted. According to the American Psychological Association, it is not possible to distinguish repressed memories from false ones without corroborating evidence. Memory generally consists of three processes: Encoding (the process of forming a memory code in order to get information into memory); Consolidation/Storage (maintaining encoded information in memory over a period of time); and Retrieval (recovering information from memory storage). 5 More Ways That COVID-19 is Not Like the Flu
This post continues from my previous article , which discusses the clinical differences between COVID-19 and the seasonal flu. These two diseases progress so differently because the viruses that cause them, SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza , respectively, have very little in common. Here I discuss the fine molecular details of these two viruses and how they attack us. 1. The Virus Particles Viral particles come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and compositions. While this may sound like an esoteric detail, the composition of viral particles is what determines how a virus finds and enters its preferred host cell. Viruses are called obligate intracellular parasites , because they cannot do almost anything on their own. They must enter a host cell and hijack it. They then reprogram that host cell to become a factory for making more viruses, eventually spilling them out to attack more cells. Viral particles of SARS-CoV-2 (L) and H1N1 influenza A (R). Your Dysfunctional Family
Families are not fair and we don't choose the one we are born or adopted into. Today a family is what most people are in recovery from. What is a functional family, anyway? Why doesn't yours match up? Here are three key elements of "the functional family". 1. The functional family encourages the optimal growth of all of its members and provides a safe space where individuals can more or less be themselves. Families promote of sense of unity and belonging (the "we") while respecting the separateness and difference of individual members (the "I"). 2. Parents make and enforce rules that guide a child's behavior but they do not regulate the child's emotional and intellectual life. Individual family members feel free to share their thoughts and feelings on emotionally loaded subjects, without telling others what to think and feel, and without getting too nervous about differences. 3. Parents are calmly connected to their own family of origin, and no family member has to … [Read more...] about Your Dysfunctional Family
The Source of Toxic Family Relations
How do you know you have a toxic family or family member? You may feel anxious or nervous when you have to interact with them. You may feel drained after interacting with them or hearing them gossip. They may be addicted to “drama," tend to overreact emotionally and create scenes in public or within a family. They may share personal things you said to them in confidence with other people to harm you. Worse, you may feel confused, manipulated, and emotionally harmed after interacting with them or asserting your boundaries. While all families have disagreements and conflict, toxic family systems use extremely unhealthy ways of interacting with each other and resolving conflict. While disagreements and tension are inevitable in any family, the manner in which the conflict is handled is what differentiates a healthy family system from a toxic family system. Family Emotional Violence Research supports the idea that a certain level of “ aggression ” is a “normal” part … [Read more...] about The Source of Toxic Family Relations
