The largest genome analysis of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (S. Typhi) also shows that resistant strains - almost all originating in South Asia - have spread to other countries nearly 200 times since 1990. The researchers noted that Typhoid fever is a global public health concern, causing 11 million infections and more than 100,000 deaths per year. While it is most prevalent in South Asia - which accounts for 70 per cent of the global disease burden - it also has significant impacts in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, highlighting the need for a global response, they said. Aminoglycoside antibiotics is used by approximately 70,000 people worldwide who inherited the chronic disease that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys and intestine. The findings showed that patients who were administered a high dose of the antibiotics to reduce their respiratory infections were 4.79 times more likely to experience permanent hearing loss. A situation that could further worsen due to isolation, depression and cognitive decline in such patients.
