Waffle House restaurants are known for keeping their lights on day and night, even during natural disasters. But as the Florida Panhandle braces for Hurricane Michael, 18 of the chain's restaurants have closed -- a possible indicator of how serious the threat from this storm really is, USA Today reported. The restaurants, which were closed as of Wednesday morning, sit in evacuation zones stretching along the Florida coast from Panama City to Destin, Pat Warner, Waffle House' director of personal relations, told the publication. "We will be there right after the storm to re-open," he said. One Waffle House in Florida's Panama City Beach had a handwritten "closed" sign posted on its door, a video tweeted Tuesday by a reporter for TV station WXIA showed. TROPICAL Storm Michael is set to become a Category 2 hurricane before it hits the coast of Florida. Here's what you need to know about the 13th named storm of the hurricane season and what preparations are being made ahead of its arrival. Where is Hurricane Michael now? Michael is currently located about 100 miles south west of the western tip of Cuba, packing maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour. The tropical storm is expected to swell into a Category 1 hurricane as soon as Monday night or early Tuesday as it rolls into the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to dump 4 to 8 inches of rain - and as much as 12 inches in some areas - on western Cuba before it hits the United States. A STATE of emergency has been declared in Florida as Tropical Storm Michael is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane with winds up to 100mph this week. The storm is likely to make landfall in the US midweek and the National Hurricane Center has predicted it will upgrade to a hurricane as early as Monday night local time. The Miami-based weather centre said Tropical Storm Michael is getting stronger and the “threat to the Northeastern US Gulf Coast is increasing".
