This post was written by Christina M. Rodriguez, Ph.D. (This is Part 2 of a series on parenting during COVID. See Part 1 here .) Why might child maltreatment rise during the pandemic? Warning sirens blared loudly at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic: Will children be safe at home? For some families, parents may appreciate extra time at home with their children. But for other families, the pandemic brought massive economic turmoil. Parents were abruptly cut off from resources—separated from extended family, friends, and childcare support. Children were out of school, away from structure, friends, and—critically—away from the oversight of teachers. Child maltreatment often rises after natural disasters (Seddighi et al., 2019) and economic downturns like the Great Recession (Brooks-Gunn et al., 2013). Unemployment, food insecurity, and financial stress increase parents’ risk of child maltreatment (Slack et al., 2011). Such economic pressure can strain parents’ … [Read more...] about Children at Risk for Maltreatment During COVID-19 Pandemic

Decode the Message in Your Child’s Behavior
This post was written by Ellen B. Luborsky, Ph.D. This post is part of a series on Parenting During COVID. Part 2 is here . It comes with the territory. Children express themselves through the language of behavior. When a small child puts her arms up, everyone knows what that means. But what about when a kid has a meltdown in the middle of the sidewalk? Or what about one who ignores everything you say? These are among the challenges that may end up in your lap. If the behavior was always difficult to deal with, it can be more so during COVID. With everyone home and the many stresses that families are under, it is not too surprising that kids feel it too. But it is important not to jump to conclusions about the meaning of behavior. Finding a way to understand and cope with feelings that come disguised as behavior is its own challenge. The Language of Behavior The language of behavior does not have a dictionary. There is no checklist that explains the meaning of a … [Read more...] about Decode the Message in Your Child’s Behavior
Bring Creativity and Adventure to Kids’ Lives During COVID
This post was written by Ellen Luborsky, Ph.D. As a child, I lived in Kansas. I remember spending hours on my neighbor’s lawn, searching for four-leaf clovers. Inside the house, my favorite game was one my sister, brother, and I invented. School was easy and we had no homework. I have always felt like that was a wonderful start. It left me wondering, glad to play, and with an interest in learning more that took me to a Ph.D. People worry that kids are falling behind, without the same structure and instruction they had in school before COVID. There is plenty that is difficult for kids these days, and almost every kid I talk with is not a fan of online school. They miss seeing their friends, they miss the random playtime together. But it does not mean that this time has to be a waste. Let’s use it as an opportunity to bring back open time, where children think for themselves, see for themselves, invent and create. But to make good use of that time, we also need plenty of … [Read more...] about Bring Creativity and Adventure to Kids’ Lives During COVID

“I’m Getting Vaccinated—Why Don’t I Feel Happier?”
It started with a friend, a family member, a neighbor. Facebook photos and texts showed them getting their vaccinations. For me, it was such a relief to see ER doctors, elderly parents, and friends working with the unhoused community getting the vaccine. It didn't change my status quo, but it was a sign that change would come. I adamantly refused to look at the progress of vaccination—afraid to see that it was going slowly and unwilling to watch the pot come to a boil. Then, my county announced that educators would be eligible for vaccination in late February. I began seeing people who were more like me across the country getting their vaccines. What seemed like a distant and unreachable future, when I would be vaccinated, was suddenly on my doorstep. I felt a giddy sense of surprise and elation—then found myself unable to sleep. Why was this good news making me feel so unsettled? Guilt There are many inequities in how vaccines have been distributed in the US, with … [Read more...] about “I’m Getting Vaccinated—Why Don’t I Feel Happier?”
