AAD research scientist Dirk Welsford said that this deep-sea sea cucumber Enypniastes eximia, also named as 'headless chicken monster,' was found floating 3 kilometres below the surface, off Heard Island. Most of the sea cucumbers are usually unable to swim, but the team witnessed that the bright purple headless chicken monster not only roaming inside the deep ocean but also searching for foods on the sea floor.Dr Welsford said that it was a real surprise for the team as they never seen such marine creature before and none of the research team members knew what it was, so "we did what a lot of scientists do and googled it.""It's one of the most spectacular specimens … [Read more...] about Marine life: Underwater cameras spotted Headless chicken monster in Southern Ocean
A BIZARRE deep-sea creature dubbed the "headless chicken monster" has been filmed in the Southern Ocean for the first time using high tech cameras designed to withstand extreme underwater pressure. Australian researchers spotted the sea cucumber three kilometres below the surface off east Antarctica. This is the first time the species - aka Enypniastes eximia - has been seen in the area, with previous sightings only recorded in the Gulf of Mexico. While most sea cucumbers are unable to swim, the Headless Chicken Monster moves through the ocean depths and lowers itself to the sea floor to feed. Remarkable footage shows the purple creature extending tentacle-like feet on the sea bed and gliding through the water. Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) program leader Dr Dirk Welsford said: “Some of the footage we are getting back from the cameras is breathtaking, including species we have never seen in this part of the world. A GREAT WHITE shark has been captured looking down the lens of a British photographer’s underwater camera, showcasing his hefty one-tonne build and 300 razor sharp teeth. Another image shows the great white breaching as it bites into a piece of bait, highlighting the power of these awesome sea predators. The predator can also be seen just beneath the surface of the rippling water, fin submerged in the classic Jaws pose. The incredible photographs were taken by UK photographer Euan Rannachan, 32, who travels to Guadalupe Island off the coast of Mexico every year in order to capture these magnificent animals. “I try and show how unassuming and graceful these massive creatures can be, while also at a flip of a switch how accurate and precise they can be in their attack,” he explained. “These animals, while apex predators, are really much more. And you really don’t appreciate that until you are in the water with them. “When you see they are really not … [Read more...] about Incredible images show great white shark staring down camera lens revealing his 300 razor-sharp teeth
