And The Three Best Therapy Methods Are…

· March 13, 2016 ·

Despite the bewildering array of current systems of therapy, when you get right down to it, the most effective ones all emphasize three major interventions: exposure for anxiety, behavioral activation for depression , and assertiveness skills training for most social and interpersonal difficulties. It must be understood, however, that no matter how knowledgeable and technically skilled a therapist is, unless he or she first develops a strong therapeutic relationship with his or her client, even the most powerful methods may prove ineffective. Indeed, as the late, great Dr. Arnold Lazarus often said, “The therapeutic relationship is the soil that enables the techniques to take root.” Thus, provided a strong alliance exists between client and therapist, these methods will usually be extremely effective. While a detailed discussion of them is beyond the scope of this post, I hope this “peek through the keyhole” will provide the essential ideas and stimulate further interest. … [Read more...] about And The Three Best Therapy Methods Are…

Know If Shani Dev Is Disappointed With You

· May 19, 2018 ·

Home Yoga spirituality Faith mysticism Faith Mysticism oi-Renu By Ishi on November 12, 2018 Shani Dev is the lord of the planet Saturn. He is known for the extreme level of results he gives, both positive as well as negative. If pleased, he will give you the best of results and if disappointed, it might become too difficult to pacify the situations. When the bad effects start, they might continue for a period as long as seven years. While other planets stay in a zodiac for a few months, he might stay for a period up to more than seven years. There are terms such as 'Dhaiya' and 'Saade-Saati', often used while discussing the position of Saturn in the birth chart by the astrologers. 'Dhaiya' is when Saturn stays for two and a half years and 'Saade- Saati' is when it stays for seven years. Whether the effects would be beneficial or malefic is further determined by the house that he is sitting in and the corresponding … [Read more...] about Know If Shani Dev Is Disappointed With You

Analysis Paralysis vs. Therapy on a Mission

Source: Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt/Wikimedia Commons Effective therapists work with clients to assess circumstances and possibilities, clarify needs, set a course, and collaboratively exploit setbacks in the course of mitigating drift, generating lift, and achieving goals. On August 6, 2014, the Rosetta space probe arrived at its destination after a nearly eleven-year journey of more than 600 million miles through our galaxy. When it arrived, it spent months carefully orbiting around comet 67P, aka Churyumov-Gerasimenko, in order to study it from afar. Rosetta first had to get a sense of the shapeliness of the mass, understand a bit of its terrain, and strategize where best to send its lander. Philae, the landing module that Rosetta had brought along, made its careful descent to the comet on November 12, 2014. Unfortunately, despite careful planning, the lander bounced … [Read more...] about Analysis Paralysis vs. Therapy on a Mission

Why Your Body Hurts During the Pandemic

· February 16, 2021 ·

Pain is spiking during the pandemic. Source: Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels Key Points: Health problems including headaches and back pain are on the rise. Negative emotions can exacerbate pain, so it's important to develop effective strategies to cope with stress and anxiety . As a pain expert, the question I get asked most is, “Do you treat physical pain or emotional pain?” My answer is always, “Yes!” If you’re experiencing pain during this time of stress and sheltering—headaches, migraine, low back pain—you’re not alone. Pain is commonly triggered, and amplified, by negative emotions like stress, anxiety, anger , and depression . And that’s no coincidence: It’s biology. Contrary to popular belief, emotions don’t just live in your head—they also come out in your body. Nervousness before a presentation creates "butterflies" in your stomach. Depression can make your limbs feel heavy, and make you walk and talk slowly. Fear makes your heart race, eyes widen, breath … [Read more...] about Why Your Body Hurts During the Pandemic

What Your Social Signals Reveal

· February 26, 2021 ·

Source: David Munro/Flickr Key Points: Humans "signal" their status by looking or behaving in socially desirable ways, but how such signals are received is dependent on context. If a previously high-status social signal (like a college degree) becomes commonplace, deliberately signaling about it could backfire. Some will instead "countersignal"—deliberately downplaying their social status—to stay ahead of the game. In his 2005 bestselling book, The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pick-Up Artists , Neil Strauss describes how a fellow student of “game” distinguishes himself among male competitors for the attention of a woman on a dating show. Most of the competitors bragged about how successful they were, but Strauss’s friend claimed he was a mere “disposable lighter repairman.” This is an example of countersignaling. Signals leak information—abilities, habits, behaviors, etc.—intentionally or otherwise. We can’t always observe personal … [Read more...] about What Your Social Signals Reveal
