Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s New Reform Bill Would Ban Members of Congress From Owning Individual Stocks
Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants to ban members of Congress and the White House staff from owning individual stocks — and replace them with government-managed investment accounts. Those are just two of the dozens of proposals dotting the Massachusetts Democrat's sweeping new legislative package, the Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Act, which she unveiled Tuesday. Warren said the bill is designed to "eliminate the influence of money in federal government." While the measure is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled Senate, it comes amid speculation that Warren could run for president in 2020. President Donald Trump ran on "draining the swamp," but his administration has been racked with corruption scandals, while many of Trump's private businesses have reaped financial gains during the early stages of his term. Warren's bill would also impose a lifetime ban on lobbying for presidents and federal lawmakers, and would bar U.S. lobbyists from using foreign cash to affect American … [Read more...] about Sen. Sen. Elizabeth Warren: Trade Deals Help Companies, Not Workers
Sen. Elizabeth Warren believes that U.S. trade policies "have not been written to enrich Americans." In an interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, the Massachusetts Democrat criticized trade deals that prioritize the interest of corporations, and also shared details about a new bill she introduced on Wednesday called the Accountable Capitalism Act. Warren pointed to the investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS) system, which allows companies to sue foreign governments over regulations that the company deems discriminatory, as an example of the ways trade policies give corporations special privileges. Under an ISDS suit, "either the country changes its law or makes a big payment. No going through a court system," Warren said. "That's just saying, in effect, trade deals are written for the guys who run these big multinationals, not for the American people." Warren also said that clauses on workers' rights and environmental protections in trade deals are difficult to enforce in … [Read more...] about Sen. Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren: ‘I Am a Capitalist’ – But Markets Need to Work for More Than Just the Rich
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has followed a circuitous path to the largest stages of American politics. Raised in Oklahoma by a family of modest means, she won a college scholarship but dropped out to get married at 19. Later she got her degree, then a law degree, and ultimately became a Harvard Law School professor and a leading authority on the economic struggles of American families. Along the way, she came up with the idea that eventually became the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, created as part of a new regulatory bill enacted after the 2008 Wall Street crisis. Republican senators announced they would block President Barack Obama from placing her atop the bureau, so in 2012 she won a Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat for herself. Heavily favored to win a second term this fall, Warren has moved to the front ranks of Democratic presidential prospects to take on President Donald Trump in 2020. The 69-year-old Warren sat down with CNBC editor at large John Harwood at a cafe in … [Read more...] about Democratic Sen.
