Read to the end, because where there is kindness, there is hope. Source: Aaron Burden/Unsplash I don’t think of myself as a scientist, even though I am a full-time academic with a faculty appointment at UC San Francisco who does peer-reviewed research all the time. Even more perplexing, I am following the adage that people study what they can’t understand. For me, that means that I study how people acquire their professional identities, even as I struggle to grasp my own. However, I unambiguously respect the methods and findings of science. If there are ten well-respected scientists and nine of them report that eating contaminated meat will kill me, I listen and don’t eat the meat. And then there is my heart which says “be kind”, act in a way that conveys respect for the dignity of another person, and helps others also to avoid that contaminated meat. These days, I am observing something profoundly confusing. I work with leading climate … [Read more...] about Youth Say “Listen to Science” and Do the Kind Thing
High Impact Holiday? Valentine’s Day is one of those “high impact holidays” where there is usually a “right way” and a “wrong way” to celebrate the occasion, depending on the individuals involved. Unfortunately, sometimes the stakes can be surprisingly high – although we might not know “how high” until we find out just how far short of our beloved’s mark we have fallen. The history of the holiday seems to be similar to the origins of many holidays -- a mash-up of both pagan and religious customs and traditions. Regardless of its beginnings, contemporary cultural expectations transcend its history. For modern romantics, it’s a day of virtually ritualistic and jubilant celebrations that typically involve meaningful symbols of admiration, appreciation, adoration, or, in some cases, personal ego. Flowers, jewelry, fine dining, candlelight, and sexy lingerie are just a few of the items associated with a … [Read more...] about 20 Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Best Friends
Even though research clearly shows that that talk therapy can be useful for people with a number of emotional difficulties, it is not always easy to find a therapist who you can talk to. If you live in an area where there aren’t many professional therapists or where it’s not considered the thing to do, then up until now you have pretty much had to live with your symptoms or try to deal with them with drugs (prescription or not), alcohol, food, sex, shopping, gambling…or something else. A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests an interesting alternative. In rural parts of the southern African country of Zimbabwe, nurses and other community health workers, called “Grandmothers,” were taught to listen to and support people living with anxiety, depression and other common mental disorders. The project is called “The Friendship Bench,” which is the name given to the simple wooden bench on the … [Read more...] about What if You’re Depressed or Anxious and Can’t Find Help?

Later this year, the Star Wars saga returns to theaters with the first new live action sequel since Return of the Jedi completed the original trilogy in 1983. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, and the droids C-3PO and R2-D2 return, along with all-new enemies and allies. What is it about these characters and their stories that touched people all across the world? Help us try to figure that out, a little bit of it anyway, by sharing your thoughts on what these characters are like in this survey: An OCEAN Far Away. One of the most robust constructs in personality psychology is the "Big 5" set of personality factors identified by numerous researchers, although perhaps best associated with McCrae and Costa (1987) whose meta-analysis of many studies showed a recurring finding: Five personality factors derived through factor analysis appear in different people across time and throughout various cultures. Traits within … [Read more...] about An OCEAN Far Away: Big 5 Personality Factors in Star Wars
