Under the supervision of researchers from the University of Oxford, 117 people who suffered from chronic severe back pain were asked to take part in a trial for a powerful new pain killer. They were told that some members of the group would be given a placebo. However, in reality they all received a placebo — pills containing ground-up rice powder, to be precise. There was no powerful new painkiller. All 117 participants took the rice powder tablets daily for a month and almost half reported a medically significant improvement in their condition. The news comes after thousands of people in northwest China were tested positive for a bacterial disease or an infection called brucellosis. As per the reports from the Health Commission of Lanzhou, the disease is caused by contact with livestock carrying the bacteria Brucella. According to CNN, the outbreak stemmed from a leak at the Zhongmu Lanzhou biological pharmaceutical factory last year between late July and August. The factory, which manufactures Brucella vaccines for animal use, used expired disinfectants and sanitisers, causing the bacteria to survive in the waste gas and cause a nation-wide infection outbreak [2] . “ White privilege ” has become a widely discussed topic in our current social and political climate. White privilege refers to advantages White people experience that people of color do not experience. White privilege doesn’t mean that a White person hasn’t faced challenges or had terrible things happen to them—it simply means that the color of their skin was not the reason those things happened and that being confronted with racial oppression in its many forms on a daily basis was not one of those challenges (to learn more, see this and this ).
