The government may be partially shut down, but that won't stop hundreds of volunteers dressed in Christmas hats and military uniforms Monday from taking calls from children around the world who want to know when Santa will be coming. The military says the NORAD Tracks Santa won't be affected by the government shutdown because it is run by volunteers Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado and is funded by the Department of Defense's budget that was approved earlier this year. Now in its 63rd year, the Santa tracker became a Christmas Eve tradition after a mistaken phone call to the Continental Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1955. CONAD, as it was known, had the serious job of monitoring a far-flung radar network for any sign of a nuclear attack on the United States. When Col. Harry Shoup picked up the phone that day, he found himself talking not to a military general, but to a child who wanted to speak to Santa Claus. A Colorado Springs newspaper had run an ad … [Read more...] about NORAD Santa Tracker Will Still Run Despite Government Shutdown

"The Incomplete Book of Running" by Peter Sagal, Simon & Schuster, 208 pages You'll want to love Peter Sagal's book, "The Incomplete Book of Running," especially if you're a runner and particularly if you like Sagal, the host of NPR's popular news quiz show "Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me!" For those of us old enough to remember, the title and cover photo are a spoof of Jim Fixx's iconic 1977 book "The Complete Book of Running," which helped set off the U.S. running boom. He is clever, warm, funny and engaging, and as a longtime Runner's World columnist, he knows his running stuff. But the book is not just about running. It's about running and personal growth, which is both its virtue and its vice. The marathon is an easy metaphor for life's trials, and if you happen to actually be a marathoner, well, there's probably no … [Read more...] about Book review: How running transformed the life of NPR host Peter Sagal
