The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will open a pediatric urgent care center in Bryn Mawr this weekend, adding to a growing network of child-focused facilities in the region. The new urgent care center will be located in the same building as the existing CHOP Primary Care, Haverford facility at 663 W. Lancaster Ave.. CHOP pediatricians and nurses will staff the urgent care center, which will specifically provide after-hours care for children with mild to moderate, non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries that do not require the resources of an emergency room. The Bryn Mawr location joins three others in Chalfont, Glen Mills and King of Prussia. “We are excited to now offer urgent care in four locations throughout the growing CHOP Care Network, making it even more convenient for local families to get expert pediatric care in their communities,” said Liz Younkins, assistant vice president of the CHOP Care Network. “CHOP Urgent Care Centers provide families with … [Read more...] about CHOP to open pediatric urgent care center in Bryn Mawr

Bryn Mawr Hospital is the first hospital in Pennsylvania to enroll a patient in a clinical trial on a new treatment for people with an advanced form of heart disease. The treatment, Intravascular Lithotripsy by Shockwave Medical, uses sonic pressure waves to break up the calcium in arterial plaque blockages, according to a news release from the hospital, which is part of Main Line Health's Lankenau Heart Institute. By breaking up the calcium deposits, arteries can be opened to restore proper blood flow to allow installation of a stent. The hospital also was the first in the region to lithotripsy to treat calcified leg artery blockages. Lithotripsy has been used since the early 1980s to treat kidney stones, which also form out of calcium.MORE HEALTH: Parents, dental hygiene should begin at the first tooth“We are thrilled to be the first in the state of Pennsylvania to offer this innovative technology,” said Dr. Sarang Mangalmurti, Lankenau Heart Institute interventional … [Read more...] about Bryn Mawr Hospital first in Pennsylvania to enroll patient in clinical trial for new heart blockage treatment

Did you catch that viral video of American tourists brawling in the lobby of a Ritz Carlton hotel in Aruba on Christmas Eve?If not, you can delve deeper into this important incident here, here or in the compare-and-contrast videos embedded lower in this post. In it, you’ll see both men and women trading shoves, kicks and harsh words. You will also see a 20-something man come out of nowhere and appear to sucker punch an age-appropriate foe at the eight-second mark before shoving a woman out of his way and going back in for more. (World Star!) At several points in the 51-second clip, a woman is heard yelling, “What is going on?” Her dialect is distinctly Philadelphia-region. Because of that – and supplemented by a photo I found on Facebook of a local family in Palm Beach, Aruba at the time of the Christmas Eve melee – I’m inclined to believe a story that an anonymous tipster shared with me this week. Specifically, the tipster offered the name of the … [Read more...] about Investigation: Was Center City Sips brawler involved in Christmas Eve fracas in Aruba?
