WABASHA, Minn. - In the weeks before Olympic cyclist Kelly Catlin killed herself, she felt her mind slipping. She could not focus on her schoolwork at Stanford, where she was a first-year graduate student in computational mathematics. In an email she sent to her family, a coach and a friend in January, she said her thoughts were "never-ending spinning, spinning, spinning" as if they were "never at rest, never at peace." She wrote that she cried about it, and that made her feel even worse. For years, Catlin, 23, was someone who took pride in holding back tears. Catlin told her sister, Christine, that seeking therapy meant she was weak and that she would rather suffer. She told her brother, Colin, that she thought she was going insane and she worried that she was a danger to others because she was filled with rage. She wrote that she was scared of dying. "What is it like to no longer have a mind?" she wrote in January, just days before a first suicide attempt. She answered the question. … [Read more...] about Olympic cyclist Kelly Catlin of Minnesota seemed destined for glory. Why did she die by suicide?

HUFFPOST PERSONAL 01/04/2019 08:30 am ET Jamie CattanachGuest Writer In the fitting room of a Limited Too in Miami, I told my mother, You’re hurting me. She was sausaging my body into an American flag T-shirt in the largest size they sold. She was trying to help. In the third grade, I’d pore over their catalog for hours, longing not only for the bohemian-chic bandana halter tops but for the body that would allow me to wear them. The T-shirt was for a patriotic school event, red, white and blue temporarily replacing our khaki-based uniforms. I ended up wearing something else. After spending my entire childhood inside an obese body, I finally lost 80 pounds in my early 20s, having thought I’d already tried everything. I’d said as much to my boyfriend at the time, who would frequently remark on the attractiveness of other, thinner women. He assured me that it was all just thermodynamics, that I could lose the weight if I “really wanted … [Read more...] about This Is What No One Tells You About Massive Weight Loss

It was updated on Dec. 29, 2018.] Matt Herren still struggles to make sense of what happened the night of Oct. 12, 2012, when his close friend, Ryan Poston, was killed. "I think about him every day," Herren said. "You don't think something like that is ever going to happen to someone you know." "Is there something I could've done that could've prevented that? And I know a lot of people in his life had to have felt the same way," Herren told "48 Hours" correspondent Peter Van Sant. How did things spiral so out of control between Ryan and his girlfriend, Shayna Hubers, that she shot him to death -- insisting it was to protect herself? "What was lost when your friend was shot and killed?" Van Sant asked Herren. "He's the type of person that you want in your life," he replied. "Not just a friend, but a loving son, a protective, adoring older brother." "He had … [Read more...] about New murder trial for Shayna Hubers: Why did she shoot Ryan Poston six times?
