A suicide statistics report, released last year, by the Samaritans showed there were 6,639 suicides in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (ROI) in 2015. Of that figure 4,997 were men, meaning 75 per cent of all suicides in 2015 in the UK and the ROI were committed by men. An average of 20 military veterans died each day from suicide, according to a Veterans Administration study that analyzed personnel records between 1979 and 2014.That statistic has galvanized Terry Sharpe of Summerfield, North Carolina, to undertake an ongoing mission.A Marine veteran who served in Vietnam, Sharpe began walking from his home to Washington, D.C., for the first time in 2014 to raise awareness .
