According to the study, joining in at least six weeks of intensive workouts, such as short rounds of interval training for 20 minutes, can noticeably improve high-interference memory. This type of memory allows people to distinguish items, which allows a person to identify, for example, their car from another of the same make and model. Researchers behind the study, which was published in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, have pointed out the importance of the findings, particularly for its immediate effects. Participants of the study posted an increase in memory over the duration of the experiment. … [Read more...] about Better body, better brain: High intensity workouts found to benefit memory
Quick high intensity cardio workouts
For some guys, there's nothing better than a good long run. Jogging for hours can give you a chance to clear your head, get out of the house, and burn through calories — all great perks you won't get from sitting on the coach. Lots of guys love the benefits they get from running, but hate the monotony of the activity. These sad sloggers only keep it up because they know its good for them. At a 10-minute-per-mile pace — roughly the average guy’s marathon pace — you’ll fry about 10 calories a minute, which isn't too shabby. Once you up that pace, you can burn even more, but the scenery probably won't get any more interesting even though it's zooming by a little faster. If anything, resentful runners will only feel worse, because the task just gets harder. Thankfully, non-runners shouldn't feel like they're trapped in a jogger's world if they want to quickly burn up some calories. If running isn’t your favorite cardio exercise, there are plenty of … [Read more...] about 11 Cardio Exercises That Burn More Calories than Running
Get the Better newsletter. SUBSCRIBE Time is of the essence these days or, at least, a lack of it. Studies show a busy and overworked life has become somewhat of “an aspirational status symbol.” As a result of all this busyness, the popularity of quick workouts, such as high intensity interval training (H.I.I.T.) or quick workout apps (like the Streaks workout app) offer a degree of fitness in just a little longer than a lengthy commercial break. But do they work? And could they be as effective as a more expensive or time-consuming workout? Quick workouts really do work — in a pinch Science says yes — at first glance. A 2016 study of sedentary men over 12 weeks examined whether sprint interval training (SIT), 1-minute bursts of intense exercise within a 10-minute routine, could improve insulin sensitivity (lowering your blood sugar) and cardiometabolic health as well as a 50-minute workout. And what do you know, the benefits proved similar. Michael Joyner, … [Read more...] about Do 5-minute workouts really work?
Getty Imagespraetorianphoto You know that girl on the elliptical who sticks it out for an entire episode of This Is Us, slogging away at the same pace for the whole thing? (Maybe you even are that girl...?) Welp, sorry to break it to her (you?), but she could be spending a lot less time in the gym each week and seeing even better results, thanks to something called HIIT (a.k.a. high-intensity interval training—and, yup, it's pronounced "hit").The technique doesn't require fitness influencer-level skills, either: you can do HIIT with any workout, as long as you're mixing up short, intense bursts of activity with less hardcore moves or complete rest in between. Still not convinced you should give it a try? Allow me to change your mind... 1 It burns more calories while you're working out. Who wouldn’t love a workout that’s more efficient? HIIT burns 25 to 30 percent more calories than resistance training, cycling, and treadmill running, according to a study … [Read more...] about 10 Reasons To Try High-Intensity Interval Training
