VILLAGERS have been left baffled after bits of a UFO plummeted from the sky over rural Cambodia, prompting local fears the shrapnel might be alien. Locals in Preah Vihear province said they heard a loud bang at around 6am local time before running outside and discovering dozens of pieces of aluminium. Fragments of the UFO had clattered into homes causing damage over an area of more than six miles, but no people were injured. Villagers collected the fragments of the flying object and reported the mystery to police, who have been unable to identify the wreckage. The discovery - just 180 miles north of an area where missing flight MH370 was believed to have been seen in the jungle - has sparked fears that the metal could be from an alien aircraft. Villager Sok Nol in the Srayong commune of Kulen district where the pieces were found said: ''I heard a big noise in the morning. I was shocked and thought something bad had happened. ''When I went to look there was one big piece in a field, and … [Read more...] about Mystery as massive lumps of metal fall from the sky over Cambodia sparking alien invasion fears

Weaponized bugs and other threats to human existence we should ponder
JAKE ELLISON, SFGATE.COM Published 3:52 pm PDT, Friday, October 12, 2018 Weaponized insects. A US military research program run by DARPA is spending millions to find ways to use insects to inject modified genes into plants, after they've started growing. "Such an unprecedented capability would provide an urgently needed alternative to pesticides, selective breeding, slash-and-burn clearing, and quarantine, which are often ineffective against rapidly emerging threats and are not suited to securing mature plants," DARPA writes. The program is called Insect Allies, and DARPA says it'll stay in protected labs. Editing plants genes in the field--as opposed to editing genes in a seed and living with what grows--with insects? What could possibly go wrong? less Weaponized insects. A seismic change in predicting how earthquakes will shake tall buildings
Thomas Fuller, New York Times 7:25 pm, Wednesday, June 27, 2018 Now Playing: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory conducted a simulation to show what would happen if a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Hayward fault. Media: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory LOS ANGELES — In their quest to make tall buildings safe during earthquakes, engineers have for decades relied on calculations that represent the tremors and convulsions that a building can endure. Some of the world’s top earthquake experts now say the projections significantly underestimate the severity of shaking that buildings in several West Coast cities are likely to undergo during earthquakes. The research, presented Wednesday at a gathering of earthquake experts in Los Angeles, has significant consequences in the ways tall buildings are designed. Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, San Jose and Seattle are among the cities that have buildings that could sustain more damage than … [Read more...] about A seismic change in predicting how earthquakes will shake tall buildings
