YELLOW vest campaigner James Goddard has been arrested by police in central London on public order offences. His supporters say he was about to hand himself in at Holborn police station at midday. The People's Assembly Against Austerity had organised an anti-austerity march, inspired by the yellow vest movement that has sprung up in France. The group had called for a national day of action on Saturday, with demonstrations being held in London and around the country from noon. Supporters gathered outside the BBC's Broadcasting House hoping to march to Trafalgar Square. Since forming in December last year the group has grabbed attention by blocking London bridges as well as confronting MPs and journalists, mostly outside the Houses of Parliament. Goddard, originally from Leicester, was recently filmed shouting at Remainer Tory MP Anna Soubry, calling her a "Nazi". In a Facebook video posted by the group Goddard is heard threatening to “make her life hell”. When Orangemen and soldiers took to Irish dancing: the new book which traces the huge influence of Protestants on a tradition mistakenly believed to be preserve of Catholics BelfastTelegraph.co.uk It was an old boyfriend from Belfast who first sparked my interest in the history of Irish dancing. UBER drivers in three English cities are poised to go on strike from tomorrow over workers' rights. Drivers for the online taxi firm in London, Birmingham and Nottingham are due to stop working from 1pm on October 9 for 24 hours. The strike has been called by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) as the firm continues to fight a court battle since 2016. Uber lost an employment tribunal two years ago when it ruled against the company over its classification of drivers as independent contractors – the company has appealed against the decision ever since. Due to the appeals, the original ruling that Uber had to class its drivers as “limb b workers” – which means they are entitled to the minimum wage and holiday pay – has not been implemented. James Farrar, the leader of union’s private hire drivers branch, has asked for public support for the striking drivers by asking customers not to use the app during the stoppage. Uber has around … [Read more...] about Uber taxi drivers in London, Birmingham and Nottingham set to strike from tomorrow over worker rights
UBER drivers are set to go on strike in three cities across the UK tomorrow. Here’s what we know about the industrial action. When is the Uber Strike? A trade union called on Uber drivers to strike on Tuesday for 24 hours by not signing into the app. Uber has around 60,000 drivers in Britain and earlier this year won back its right to operate in London after it was stripped of its licence by the city's regulator. The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) expects hundreds of drivers at least to participate in the industrial action from 1pm on Tuesday by not signing into the app. Protests are also planned outside Uber's offices. Why are drivers protesting? Drivers are pushing for higher fares and more working rights. In Britain, its drivers are self-employed, entitling them in law to few workplace rights, prompting the IWGB and others to launch legal action. A Court of Appeal hearing over workers' rights at the company is due later this month. Uber drivers are not … [Read more...] about When is the Uber Strike, why are taxi drivers protesting, how long will it last and which UK cities will be affected?
