How Infidelity Causes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

· September 29, 2017 ·

Of all of the threats to a committed relationship I have treated in four decades of working with couples, the most difficult to heal is infidelity. When a trusted partner in a committed relationship betrays the sacred trust of the other, the relationship will undergo severe instability. The partner who has been betrayed is emotionally tortured and humiliated when knowledge of the infidelity emerges. They are clearly in trauma and experience the same array of symptoms that professionals now describe as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Similar to any others who have suffered threats to their physical or emotional well-being and security, they are disoriented and confused by what has happened. Relationship partners of both genders experience similar of the classical symptoms of PTSD: Repeated intrusive thoughts. Unstable emotional regulation. Out of body experiences. Alternating between feeling numb and striking out in retaliation. Inability to stop scanning for any new data that might … [Read more...] about How Infidelity Causes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Mindfulness Made Simple

· March 31, 2013 ·

Mindfulness in a Daffodil “Mindfulness” has become a buzzword that is often misinterpreted. What is mindfulness? How can it benefit you?  Mindfulness is much more basic than most people realize. In fact, I’ve isolated 3 easy steps to kickstart a state of mindfulness in a few seconds. To kickstart a state of mindfulness all you have to do is: Stop. Breathe. Think about your thinking. Anybody can use this simple mindfulness technique throughout the day to stay calm, focused, optimistic, and kind. This close-up picture of a daffodil illustrates simple mindfulness training. What part of the image is your attention drawn to first? Is your focus initially drawn to the stamen at the center? Where do your eyes and your attention go from there? Notice how you can hone in on the center or decide to inspect the abstract shapes and different colors in the surrounding. We all have the power to guide our thoughts consciously—to zoom in and zoom out on specific … [Read more...] about Mindfulness Made Simple

The Art Of Focus

· December 6, 2019 ·

Summary of Blog 1 (In Spite of Yourself) - Feelings First or Second? Personal and family safety, continuously assessed at an intuitive level, comes first. Following this assessment, instinct creates feelings to shape our behaviour - our thoughts as well as our actions. Feelings determine what we think and do to survive.  Every emotion you have is necessary for survival, and that includes feelings that we don't want to have like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, anger, envy, jealousy.  There are ways to influence the feelings produced by instinct (drugs - medication, alcohol, nicotine, party drugs - to disrupt your brain) or to lessen the distress of instinct (activity to distract you).  Selling you on ways to change your feelings is a lucrative and a 'repeat business' because following every change, instinct will ensure the return of emotions that you need for survival. So whether the 'business' is the accumulation of money, power, relationships, possessions or … [Read more...] about The Art Of Focus
