We hear about checks and balances first – and often last – in high school current events classes: Democratic republics have checks and balances which stabilize them, keeping them from spinning out of control in any number of directions. Ecosystems are also sustained by checks and balances which keep them from spinning out of control. We organisms and relationships are too. We’d do well to think more about these checks and balances since they explain a lot – far more than just governing. I am my checks and balances. When I lose them and things spin out of control for me in any number of directions, I will no longer exist. We commonly say seeing is believing. But for many of us, feeling is believing. Our feelings lead to beliefs that are more compelling than beliefs arrived at by other means. Unfortunately, beliefs based on feelings are often inaccurate. For example, we may believe that if we feel afraid, there must be danger. This is a form of what psychological theorist Peter Fonagy calls psychic equivalence. Psyche means the mind. Equivalence means things are the same. In a state of psychic equivalence, a person is convinced their awareness and reality are one and the same. In other words, "Everything in my mind exists and everything that exists is in my mind." Children, Fonagy says, spend the first three years of life in a state of psychic equivalence. But at around three, most children realize something can exist in their mind that does not exist elsewhere.
