Governor Andrew Cuomo flew to Puerto Rico on Sunday to launch an initiative that will recruit students and professionals to rebuild homes that were destroyed by Hurricane Maria last year. Around 500 student volunteers from SUNY and CUNY will team up with building professionals and Puerto Rico-based not-for-profits to aid reconstruction efforts on the island, Cuomo said in a press conference at John F. Kennedy International Airport ahead of his third trip since the hurricane. Half a million homes were damaged during the September catastrophe, and the crisis is ongoing, the governor said. “When we were there the morning after the Hurricane, we said this was going to be a long road," he said. "New Yorkers are going to walk with Puerto Rico every step of the way." In our series American Voices, we explore how high-level decisions and debates play out on the local level. About 40,000 homes and businesses in Puerto Rico are still without power, seven months after Hurricane Maria's devastation. Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, who said "it just feels like yesterday," said the U.S. territory is finally "starting to reach normalcy." But just last week, the whole island lost power in a blackout that impacted more than 1.4 million customers. Officials said an excavator accidentally downed a transmission line. The contractor was fired. Rosselló, who has been a strong advocate for federal aid to rebuild the island's infrastructure and provide interim housing, said he understands people's outrage. He described the recovery process so far as "highly frustrating." "The energy rebuild has been the most frustrating part. I've been very critical, for example, the Corps of Engineers, because they haven't had the sense of urgency. … [Read more...] about Puerto Rico governor on the “highly frustrating” hurricane recovery process
Power was restored to more than 1.1 million Puerto Ricans after an island-wide blackout plagued the U.S. territory Wednesday. Roughly 80% of customers were out of the dark by 7 a.m. Thursday, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority said on Twitter. Nearly 1.5 million PREPA customers lost power Wednesday, when a crew working to restore a collapsed tower hit a transmission line, knocking out electricity for the entire island. The outage—one of many since Hurricane Maria destroyed the island’s electric grid—came just one week after 840,000 customers lost power after a tree fell on another transmission line, causing an outage. The contractor responsible for both outages was subsequently fired, according to PREPA spokesman Geraldo Quinones Lopez, NBC News reported. Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello suggested Wednesday that PREPA cancel its contract with Cobra. “This is the second power failure that has affected … [Read more...] about Power restored to 1.1 million PREPA customers after island-wide blackout cripples Puerto Rico
(Natural News) Life in Puerto Rico is about to turn medieval, thanks to the massive damage caused by Hurricane Maria, the once-in-a-century storm that just destroyed the island nation’s entire power grid.As reported by The Washington Post, sustained gale-force winds of up to 155 miles power hour when Maria made landfall leveled buildings, flooded cities with more than 20 inches of rain, “disabled radar, weather stations and cell towers” across the country. As the UK’s Daily Mail added, the storm also eliminated the island’s power grid, which, Gov. Ricardo Rosselló said, was “a little bit old, mishandled and weak” before the storm blew through.Asked by CNN when the nation might have power restored, Rosselló’s prognosis was grim, indeed.“It depends on the damage to the infrastructure,” Rosselló said. “I’m afraid it’s probably going to be severe. If it is … we’re looking at months as … [Read more...] about Hurricane Maria just wiped out ALL power on the entire island of Puerto Rico … still think prepping is a waste of time?
