It seemed strange not heading directly home as we usually do, but we were heading to the holy of holies for a Northern Ireland fan - and as all of you will know I am literally 'obsessive' in my support for the team. Ironically my consultant Aisling Courtney mentioned at the beginning of my appointment that my blood pressure was high which, for a fleeting … [Read more...] about Mark Dobson: IFA on the ball helping us spread the word on organ donation

Fatal drug overdoses and increased organ donations: What research has found
WASHINGTON — The loss of life from drug overdoses, particularly with the opioid crisis, may have contributed to an increase in organ donations, according to recently published medical research. Organ donation for transplantation from people who died from drug intoxication increased more than tenfold between 2000 and 2016, according to research published in the The New England Journal of Medicine. The increase has occurred “predominantly in the last four or five years,” said Mandeep R. Mehra, M.D., medical director of the Heart and Vascular Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Investigators at University of Utah Health also worked on the study. Some doctors and people who need transplants are skeptical of the viability of the organs because of their source. But the study found that with heart and lung transplants, which are more sensitive to oxygen loss that can occur during overdoses, outcomes are very similar to other organ donor sources. … [Read more...] about Fatal drug overdoses and increased organ donations: What research has found

Dennis, known to his friends and Denzil, was killed in a freak accident in Cornwall in September 2016 at the age of 23. After his death, he donated his organs and saved four lives. Girlfriend beaten to death by boxer lover in post-sex row saved six lives through organ donations
A GIRLFRIEND beaten to death by her boxer boyfriend in a post-sex row has saved six lives after her family donated her organs. Kellie Gillard, 25, was viciously slapped by thug partner James Tobin, 20, which caused her to fall out of bed and bang her head on the wall. Tobin initially denied attacking Kellie - but was caught when police bugged his house and heard him say: "I put her to sleep." Kellie was unconscious when she arrived at hospital and put on a life support machine. When doctors told her family she would die they took the brave decision to donate her organs. Talking during an interview that will air on Welsh language channel Y Ditectif, her sister Sadie said: "Kellie saved six lives through organ donation. I’m so proud of her. “Kellie would hate us [talking] like this. I can just imagine her coming in now, ‘Oh for God’s sake, listen, let’s get on with it now’… it’s just the way that she would be. "We should just try … [Read more...] about Girlfriend beaten to death by boxer lover in post-sex row saved six lives through organ donations
