Mason Reppen (photo via The Oldham Era) An Oldham County family that lost a son and brother to a drug overdose has responded by fostering a drug-education program and a youth group, Amanda Manning reports for The Oldham Era. Mason Reppen died of an overdose of fentanyl in Lexington, and another 22-year-old University of Kentucky student, Clay Jennings, pleaded guilty to a federal charge of providing the drug to him, Manning reports. Jennings had "no criminal record and a stable home life." He is to be sentenced Sept. 28. "After Mason passed away, family and friends asked how they could help," Manning writes. Reppen's mother, Kelley Wirth, created a GoFundMe page for drug education in the county that has raised more than $6,700. A MAN has died after he was attacked on the street outside a pub while celebrating his birthday in Oldham, police revealed today. Stephen McGiffen, from Oldham, turned 36 on Thursday and had been out with his girlfriend and others on Yorkshire Street when the evening took a tragic turn. In the early hours of Friday, July 13, emergency services were told a man had been assaulted. When they arrived they found Stephen lying on the floor with serious head injuries. He was rushed to hospital where his loved ones remained by his bedside, but he tragically died today. Greater Manchester Police have said his family are being offered support by specially trained officers and a Home Office Post Mortem examination will take place tomorrow. Two men – aged 19 and 20 – were arrested on suspicion of assault and have since been bailed pending further enquiries. A MAN died after police used CS spray on him as they tried to arrest him following reports of a domestic disturbance. Officers attended an address in Oldham, Gtr Manchester, at 11.35pm on Friday – and arrested the man in his 30s on suspicion of a breach of the peace. They used CS spray in a bid to detain him – and he was transported to nearby Ashton-under-Lyne in a police van. But on arrival at the town’s police station, the man was found to be unresponsive in the back of the vehicle. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. MILLIONS of Brits have cast their votes across all 150 councils for the Local Elections 2018. Two thirds of the results have already been announced, but the full picture won't be revealed until later today. More than 4,250 council seats across 150 local authorities are up for grabs in more than 150 areas. Metro mayors, Councillors and one MP will be elected in today's ballot. It is the first electoral test for both Labour and the Tories since last year's general election where Mrs May lost her majority and Mr Corbyn won an extra 30 seats for Labour. Local election polls opened this morning at 7am to allow some keen voters to get their vote done and dusted before heading off to work.
