A fast-moving fire roared through several homes in a northern New Jersey neighborhood, injuring six firefighters and displacing 51 residents. The fire in Paterson began around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in a home on Summer Street and quickly spread to the other structures. Responding firefighters found the flames shooting through the roofs of the homes. While residents managed to escape the flames to safety, fire officials called for backup. Nearly 150 firefighters from around the area responded. Fire officials say the injured firefighters were mostly treated for dehydration and related injuries suffered as they battled the blaze on a hot and humid morning. Adam Sandler shocked a bunch of Atlantic City kids Friday when he showed up to play some hoops at a basketball court in the South Jersey beach town. "I couldn’t believe it,” said Jahmir Campfield, one of the kids at the basketball court. “I wanted to see him in person because he’s mad funny in the movies.” The comedian and three of his friends stopped by a basketball court on Pennsylvania Avenue in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Friday afternoon before he performed at the Hard Rock casino that night. "He was like, 'Can I play with you guys?' And we’re like, 'Yeah, sure,'" 12-year-old Jahlil Boston said. Akorn gets FDA warning letter related to New Jersey plant
(Reuters) - Akorn Inc said on Tuesday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has raised certain issues related to its Somerset, New Jersey manufacturing facility, sending the generic drugmaker’s shares down nearly 13% premarket. The FDA warning letter followed an inspection of the plant in July and August last year and is the latest in a series of setbacks for Akorn and comes months after the agency raised concerns about its manufacturing plant in Amityville, New York. In January, Akorn’s manufacturing plant in Decatur, Illinois, received a warning letter after it did not resolve previously highlighted violations such as failure to follow procedures to prevent contamination of drugs produced at the plant. Akron, which said it will work to resolve all issues raised in the agency’s letter, expects to continue production at the Somerset facility. Murphy Signs Bills Aimed at Helping New Jersey Residents Facing Foreclosure
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has signed into law a measure aimed at helping the state continue to recover from a housing foreclosure crisis that stemmed from the Great Recession. The first-term Democrat signed the nine bills Monday in Atlantic City. “The foreclosure crisis has hurt our economy and jeopardized economic security of too many New Jersey families,” Murphy said. “Our communities cannot succeed while vacant or foreclosed homes sit empty or while families live in limbo. I am proud to sign these bills into law today and get New Jersey closer to ending the foreclosure crisis.” The administration says about one out of a thousand homes are in foreclosure, a total of about 20,000 households. Gov. Phil Murphy Unveils $38.6B New Jersey Budget
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy unveiled his second budget Tuesday, calling for about $1 billion in increased spending that would be financed by higher income tax rates on wealthy residents and savings in public worker benefits. The first-term Democrat presented the fiscal year 2020 budget in a roughly hour-long speech Tuesday before a joint meeting of the Democratic-led Assembly and Senate, casting the spending plan as fiscally responsible and fair. His fellow Democrats have pre-emptively said they won't support higher taxes, and it's unclear how Murphy will navigate such a hurdle. He seemed to acknowledge the tension during his speech. "I understand the budget I am proposing today will not be identical to the one I will ultimately sign. We will talk, we will negotiate, and we will compromise. That is as it should be.
