For about three weeks the country has seen increasing numbers of new cases and somewhat higher hospitalisations, but no increase in severe cases and deaths, said Professor Marta Nunes, a researcher at Vaccine and Infectious Diseases Analytics at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. "We're still very early in this increased period, so I don't want to really call it a wave," Nunes said. "We are seeing a slight, a small increase in hospitalizations and really very few deaths." As a general principle, an interval of 4-6 months since completion of the primary series of the vaccine could be considered for a first booster, especially in the context of Omicron, said the World Health Organisation, with the support of the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on immunisation and its COVID-19 Vaccines Working Group. Mozambique reported its first case since 1992 on Wednesday, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It's the second case to be detected on the continent this year, after Malawi reported Africa's first case in five years in February. The case in Mozambique was detected in a child in the country's northeastern Tete province, according to the WHO. Like the case reported earlier this year in Malawi, genomic sequencing shows it is linked to a strain that circulated in Pakistan in 2019.
