You May Not Be Supported by Nineteen out of 20 people who have been told they are allergic to penicillin are not truly allergic to the drug. ByRoni Caryn Rabin Jan. 22, 2019 Millions of Americans who believe they are allergic to penicillin are not actually allergic. But they are steered away from using some of the safest, most effective antibiotics, relying instead on substitutes that are often pricier, less effective, and more likely to cause complications such as antibiotic-resistant infections. Those are the conclusions of a new paper on penicillin allergy. Experts in allergy and infectious disease, including the paper’s authors, are now urging patients to ask doctors to review their medical history, and re-evaluate whether they have a true penicillin allergy. British surgeons warned not to perform Brazilian butt lift surgery
Story highlights The surgeries have a higher rate of death or serious complications than others (CNN)UK surgeons were strongly warned this week by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons to stop performing Brazilian butt lifts. The organization warns that "risky" Brazilian butt lifts, sometimes called BBLs, have the highest death rate of all cosmetic surgery procedures -- estimated to be as high as 1 in 3,000 operations -- and often result in costly emergency complications. This year, two women in the UK have died from the procedure, according to the BBC. "This risk has galvanised the BAAPS to distribute a recommendation to all members, suggesting they refrain from performing BBLs, at least until more data is available," the association said in a statement Thursday. British surgeons told to STOP performing Brazilian bum lifts – as second Brit dies from ‘deadliest cosmetic op’
COSMETIC surgeons have called for a ban on Brazilian bum lifts in the UK - following the death of a second British woman. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) has today asked it's members to stop performing the ops until more research on the dangers of the procedure can be done. In August mum-of-three Leah Cambridge died during a botched Brazilian bum lift in Turkey. A second British woman also died this year and an inquest into the second woman's death is set to begin next year, according to the Victoria Derbyshire programme. There has been a six-fold increase in the number of patients needing urgent follow-up care after botched overseas ops … [Read more...] about British surgeons told to STOP performing Brazilian bum lifts – as second Brit dies from ‘deadliest cosmetic op’
Most people who think they have a penicillin allergy are wrong. Why that’s dangerous
By Kate Furby, The Washington Post Are you allergic to penicillin? If so, are you sure about that? It's surprisingly common for people to wrongly think they have a penicillin allergy - and that misconception can be dangerous for their health. Ten percent of all patients in the United States claim to have a penicillin allergy. Of those people, 90 percent are not truly allergic and can tolerate the drug . That means millions of people take alternative antibiotics, which are more expensive and can put their health and potentially the health of others at risk. The solution is a simple allergy test. A study in the British Medical Journal looked at six years' worth of medical records for patients in the United Kingdom and found that those with a penicillin allergy had an almost 70 percent greater chance of acquiring a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection and a 26 percent increased risk of Clostridium difficile-related colitis (C. diff.). MRSA and … [Read more...] about Most people who think they have a penicillin allergy are wrong. Why that’s dangerous
