BRAZIL'S general elections just over a week away, and one candidate is causing controversy with her election promise to every woman in Brasilia, the nation’s capital. The candidate is offering free silicone boob and bum implants for women who vote for her. Campaigning under her stage name as Brazilian funk singer MC Bandida, Valeria Santana claimed her proposal of free cosmetic surgery will be a successful one. She claims it will help boost the low self-esteem of scores of female voters who “deserve to feel empowered with better bodies”. She said: “My plan is to invest public money into improving the state of mind and wellbeing of low-income women in Brasilia who believe they need this aesthetic boost to help them feel good about themselves.” The 32-year-old blonde rap artist stands in the October 7 elections as a district deputy, the equivalent to a county councillor, with the social democratic and centrist party Avante. Influence of early-life risk factors on socioeconomic inequalities in weight gain
Abstract BackgroundPrevious research has examined the role of early-life risk factors on childhood weight gain.The extent to which these factors drive socioeconomic differences in weight is unclear. We aimed to quantify the influence of early-life risk factors on the development of socioeconomic inequalities in children’s body mass index (BMI) z-score at 10–11 years.MethodsOverall, 2186 children from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children were examined. Socioeconomic position (SEP) was measured as a continuous composite of parent’s education, occupation and income.
