Why Your Body Hurts During the Pandemic

· February 16, 2021 ·

Pain is spiking during the pandemic. Source: Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels Key Points: Health problems including headaches and back pain are on the rise. Negative emotions can exacerbate pain, so it's important to develop effective strategies to cope with stress and anxiety . As a pain expert, the question I get asked most is, “Do you treat physical pain or emotional pain?” My answer is always, “Yes!” If you’re experiencing pain during this time of stress and sheltering—headaches, migraine, low back pain—you’re not alone. Pain is commonly triggered, and amplified, by negative emotions like stress, anxiety, anger , and depression . And that’s no coincidence: It’s biology. Contrary to popular belief, emotions don’t just live in your head—they also come out in your body. Nervousness before a presentation creates "butterflies" in your stomach. Depression can make your limbs feel heavy, and make you walk and talk slowly. Fear makes your heart race, eyes widen, breath … [Read more...] about Why Your Body Hurts During the Pandemic

Practicing What I Preach

· January 8, 2021 ·

By Dr. Brian Amorello, Ph.D. Happy 2021 everyone! Throughout my training as a psychologist, one of the most important things we learned to teach our patients was the importance of exercise. We were taught not only how exercise makes us physically healthy, but mentally healthy as well. It was through countless graduate discussions on exercise that I was able to recognize further what the mind/body connection really was. The idea is this. Let’s say one is given a diagnosis such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This comes with a variety of physical issues that can include trouble walking, holding objects, and other disabilities. This … [Read more...] about Practicing What I Preach

Home Yoga spirituality Faith mysticism Faith Mysticism oi-Renu By Ishi on November 12, 2018 Shani Dev is the lord of the planet Saturn. He is known for the extreme level of results he gives, both positive as well as negative. If pleased, he will give you the best of results and if disappointed, it might become too difficult to pacify the situations. When the bad effects start, they might continue for a period as long as seven years. While other planets stay in a zodiac for a few months, he might stay for a period up to more than seven years. There are terms such as 'Dhaiya' and 'Saade-Saati', often used while discussing the position of Saturn in the birth chart by the astrologers. 'Dhaiya' is when Saturn stays for two and a half years and 'Saade- Saati' is when it stays for seven years. Whether the effects would be beneficial or malefic is further determined by the house that he is sitting in and the corresponding … [Read more...] about Know If Shani Dev Is Disappointed With You

Why Young People Still Smoke Cigarettes

· October 14, 2020 ·

Source: Image by Enrique Meseguer from Pixabay Do young people still smoke cigarettes ?  Many people are surprised to hear, that the answer is yes.  Although we are decades past the promotion of cigarettes as a personality enhancer or a weight loss aid, smoking apparently remains linked with body image , both physically and psychologically. Overestimating Benefit, Underestimating Danger Ninfa C. Peña-Purcell et al. (2018) studied the association of cigarette smoking with perceptions about self-confidence and body image, in addition to emotional benefits and health hazards.[i] Using a sample of college students, they found smokers more likely to perceive resulting emotional benefits and enhanced body image as compared with nonsmokers; results that are consistent with prior research. Acknowledging the potentially lifetime dangers associated with cigarette smoking, in addition to the likelihood of taking it up during college years, Peña-Purcell et al. found that … [Read more...] about Why Young People Still Smoke Cigarettes
