Maintaining Eating Disorder Recovery During COVID-19

· August 20, 2020 ·

Source: shin sang eun/Shutterstock By: Led Camille Soriano and Kimberly George, RD The coronavirus continues to cause a lot of fear and anxiety for numerous people around the world. The uncertainty of when this pandemic will end is anxiety-provoking for everyone, not least those who are recovering from an eating disorder . Anxiety is a known characteristic of eating disorders (hence the medical terminology anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa ). Previous research suggested that engaging in eating disorder behaviors was associated with a reduction in anxiety and vice versa. Although the benefits are transitory, these behaviors can provide a fleeting sense of control and comfort to some individuals in recovery. So as many are regaining control from their eating disorder, the anxiety surrounding COVID-19 could make individuals more likely to relapse and revert to their prior eating behaviors. Changes The lack of control and unexpected changes in … [Read more...] about Maintaining Eating Disorder Recovery During COVID-19

Humans and Wine: A Seven Thousand Year Love Affair

· November 1, 2017 ·

Hundreds if not thousands of books about wine are written each year. I'm sure many of them are excellent, but a new book entitled, A Natural History of Wine , is quite different from all of the rest. It was not written by or for wine professionals. It's written by scientists who love wine, for wine-lovers who love science. After all, "Wine is stardust." (One of the chapter titles!) Ian Tattersall (L), Rob DeSalle (R), with illustrator Patricia J. Wynne, photo taken at The Burgundy Wine Company, NYC. Source: Nathan H. Lents Ian Tattersall and Rob DeSalle, both curators at the American Museum of Natural History, have dozens of books to their credit and have collaborated on such diverse topics as race, human origins, and the brain. Tattersall is a preeminent anthropologist and seasoned oenophile, while DeSalle is a leading entomologist/microbiologist and an amateur brewer of tasty libations. Together, they focus their scrutinizing scientific perspective on the total … [Read more...] about Humans and Wine: A Seven Thousand Year Love Affair

The Newest Rankings of Dog Breeds by Popularity

· March 31, 2021 ·

Source: Dktue/Wikimedia Just how popular is your dog breed? The American Kennel Club knows the answer based upon its registration statistics. Much like clothing styles and baby names, dog breeds tend to rise and fall in terms of their popularity. Some data says that breed choice is influenced by things like which breeds of dogs are featured in popular movies. For example, the first Lassie movie in 1943 was followed by an upsurge in the popularity of collies, and surprisingly, Saint Bernards became more popular after the release of the horror film Cujo . When a dog is associated with a prominent person that can also influence its popularity, thus there was an increase in the popularity of Cocker Spaniels during the Nixon presidency, since he was seen so often with his Cocker Spaniel Checkers. Also when a dog breed is associated with a celebrity trendsetter this can raise its prominence, as in the case of Madonna and her Chihuahua, which caused the popularity of the breed to … [Read more...] about The Newest Rankings of Dog Breeds by Popularity

Serial Killers and Their Killing Fields

· August 13, 2020 ·

Source: K. Ramsland On November 3, 2016, police heard banging from inside a metal shipping container on Todd Kohlhepp’s 95-acre wooded property near Woodruff, SC. They found Kala Brown, missing for two months, chained up inside. She told them Kohlhepp had killed her boyfriend, Charlie Carver. Under arrest, Kohlhepp admitted he’d murdered seven people in three separate incidents: four in a motorcycle shop, Kala’s boyfriend, and another couple, Johnny and Meagan Coxie. Kala was likely next. Searchers found Carver’s vehicle in a ravine and his body, wrapped in a tarp, buried across from the shipping container. Kohlhepp led investigators to the Coxie graves. Apparently, he liked to use the place to lure people on the pretense of hiring them to clear brush. Then he’d kill the male and keep the woman for sex . Not many serial killers have the means to own so much property on which to hide bodies. Herb Baumeister used his Fox Hollow Farm property in Indiana for similar … [Read more...] about Serial Killers and Their Killing Fields
