By Tom Long Special to The Detroit News Published 6:28 PM EDT Sep 20, 2018 Talk about a brief, shining light that lingers on. Gilda Radner was never a movie star – she made some movies, but they were neither all that successful nor memorable. She was never the star of a primetime television show or a comic who toured the country performing for adoring audiences. Truth be told, she was on fire for about five years, 1975-1980. But man, what she accomplished in those five years. As the new documentary “Love, Gilda” makes clear, Radner's stretch as one of the original Not Ready For Prime Time Players on “Saturday Night Live” influenced countless comics who've followed in the decades since, likely including comics who don't even know who she was. Her fearless use of physicality, her ability to draw on her own neuroses and the characters that she'd met in life, and her sheer enthusiasm for unladylike silliness opened doors that can't be closed. Looking at … [Read more...] about Movie review: Radner’s star still shines in ‘Love Gilda’
Mad head love
By Mehrooj Rai Published: July 23, 2018 0 SHARES Share Tweet Email The story is engaging and appealing because like Sairat, the premise surrounds a love facing the ruthless pressures of society. PHOTO: FACEBOOK/ DHADAK MOVIE Dhadak is an adaptation of the celebrated Marathi film Sairat, based on the deep but doomed love story of two youngsters who, because of their class differences, have to pay a heavy price for being together by the hands of political and societal tyrants. The basic plot of Dhadak plays out the same way as the original, where Madhukar (Ishaan Khattar), a lower-caste boy, and Parthavi Singh (Janhvi Kapoor), an upper-caste girl, fall head over heels in love with each other. Parthavi is evocatively a fearless, boisterous and spoilt daughter of a Rajasthani political kingpin, while Madhukar is the shy son of a restaurateur who falls madly in love with her.The caste differences between the couple are an inevitable thorn in the path of their scarlet … [Read more...] about You will love Dhadak, as long as you don’t compare it to Sairat
IT started like the romances of countless people around the world . . . on Instagram. And it progressed to become the most dynamic of all modern royal romances, against the mighty backdrop of the British monarchy. At the centre was Harry, the cheeky, redheaded prince with a life of adventure and tragedy already in his wake. Even at school aged 11, Harry had girls throwing themselves at him to see who could “kiss the prince”. Finding girls was never a problem. It was finding girls he liked who could deal with his royal baggage that was the problem. Enter Violet von Westenholz, who had grown up around Harry and brother William. Her father Piers was a skiing buddy of Prince Charles, sharing Alpine holidays, and Violet was part of a trusted group of friends the boys carried through into adulthood. In 2016 Violet, a PR executive for Ralph Lauren, had a VIP client in town for Wimbledon fortnight. It was American actress Meghan Markle, who was promoting her … [Read more...] about It started on Instagram and they fell in love in Botswana – the story of Harry and Meghan’s whirlwind romance
“Don’t touch me too much. And don’t go too fast,” I said. “And don’t be mad if I don’t look like I’m having that much fun.” These were the words of encouragement (okay, commands) I gave to my significant partner before our first time having sex in the three months since I'd given birth to our daughter. Talk about a pre-sex buzzkill, right? Advertisement - Continue Reading Below In response, my ever-supportive partner remained calm. “It feels the same,” he said as soon as he was inside me. He’s right, I thought. Then, No he’s not!!! He can’t be!!! Physically, my doctor had reassured me that I was fit for sex, but psychologically I was a wreck. I was terrified that things would be permanently different ~down there~ or that I wouldn't be able to experience pleasure like before. Most of all, I was extremely aware of the extra pounds I was still carrying on my hips, thighs, and butt. I didn't want … [Read more...] about ‘I Used To Love Getting Naked—And Then I Got Pregnant’
HUFFPOST PERSONAL 05/02/2018 12:01 pm ET Shelley Mann HiteGuest Writer “Mad Men” debuted on AMC in July of 2007, but I didn’t start watching it until the midseason break, when I binged to catch up after reading somewhere it was the best show none of us were watching. I’ve always been a binger. I was 26 and had just landed a sweet job editing for one of the weekly city papers that covered the nightlife scene in Columbus, Ohio. This particular brand of journalism felt similar to the advertising world circa 1960, as we tried to make creative magic happen under relentless deadline pressure and worshipped at the altar of all things booze. The martinis and Manhattans of “Mad Men” inspired a generation of 20-somethings to embrace classic cocktail culture. For me, those seven seasons of television coincided with a particularly traumatic stretch of life, the kind that makes you run toward something to help anesthetize the … [Read more...] about I Drank Like They Did on ‘Mad Men.’ It Nearly Destroyed Me.
