Metformin is a drug that doctors use to treat people with type 2 diabetes. It works alongside other medication and insulin to lower blood sugar in people with the condition. Doctors do not usually prescribe metformin for type 1 diabetes. They can sometimes prescribe it for women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, although this use is not approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Similarly, the FDA has not sanctioned metformin to help those wanting to shed the pounds when they are overweight or obese. In this article, we take a look at the impact metformin has on weight, as well as how the drug is used. People with type 2 diabetes have lost weight from taking metformin, but they are not the only ones to benefit from the drug in this way. A study involving people who were overweight or obese and had insulin resistance showed that they lost weight while taking metformin. While some evidence suggests that metformin does lead to weight loss, neither doctors or … [Read more...] about Does metformin help you lose weight?

Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a form of intermittent fastingResearch is limited as to whether it will help you lose weightNutritionists say if it curbs unhealthy nighttime snacking, it could be a good thingIf the idea of counting calories to lose weight sounds like the absolute worst, a buzzy concept called time-restricted eating (TRE) might be more up your alley.Time-restricted eating is basically a form of intermittent fasting, which has gained traction thanks to diet books such as The 5:2 Diet and The 8-Hour Diet. Based on the theory that most of us spend way too many of our waking hours munching away, this diet method is as simple as shortening the number of hours during the day that you eat. That could mean eating only between noon and 7 p.m. or 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. (it's up to you to decide how many hours you want to eat or fast per day). But the greatest benefits of time-restricted eating seem to occur when you stop eating earlier in the day.For example, in one new … [Read more...] about What Is Time-Restricted Eating, And Can It Help You Lose Weight?
Calories are those little units of energy we consume whenever we eat, well, anything. And they are arguably the most talked-about part of any weight-loss journey. The general rule is that if you eat more calories than you use, you’ll gain weight. And if you take in fewer calories than you use, you’ll lose weight. And if those numbers are more or less even, your weight will stay about the same. It seems simple, but the number of calories you need to lose weight, maintain weight, or gain weight from lean muscle depends on your activity levels, body size, hormones, sleep, and more, explains registered dietitian Wesley Delbridge, R.D., a spokesman for the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. So figuring out how many calories you need per day can be crazy-complicated.And, it's also important to remember that, when it comes to cutting calories for weight loss, lower is not always better. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, your calories should never … [Read more...] about How Many Calories Do I Need To Lose Weight?
Some people find it harder to lose weight than others, but why is this? A new study has identified a molecule in fat cells that could be to blame. Researchers found that the fat cells of people who are obese show higher expression of a molecule called lysyl oxidase (LOX). LOX is associated with fibrosis, or "scarring," of fat tissue, which, as previous research has shown, can hamper weight loss efforts. Study co-author Dr. Katarina Kos, who works in the Diabetes and Obesity Research Group at the University of Exeter Medical School in the United Kingdom, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal Metabolism. It is thought that around 1 in 3 adults in the United States are obese, which puts them at increased risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and some forms of cancer. A lack of exercise and a poor diet are the primary causes of obesity, so it's no surprise that eating a healthful diet and increasing physical activity are the first strategies we try in an … [Read more...] about Trouble losing weight? Apple cider vinegar is made when apple cider is fermented twice. This process creates tart, amber-colored vinegar rich in acetic acid. Apple cider vinegar is one of the more common types of vinegar produced worldwide. It is touted as a natural health cure, with a number of suggested health benefits. Some of these health claims have potential, with small studies to back them up. Others, however, have little to no evidence of their validity. In this article, we investigate the claim that consuming apple cider vinegar can help with weight loss. Can drinking apple cider vinegar help someone lose weight? The answer might be yes, but it is not proven. The weight loss claims surrounding apple cider vinegar may stem from several small studies, mostly on animals. Nonetheless, these studies do show some possible benefits of apple cider vinegar and could open the door to further research. Body fat reduction Acetic acid, a compound found in apple cider vinegar, has been cited in some studies as … [Read more...] about Is apple cider vinegar good for losing weight?
