I found solace from my abusive father through food, and I've been using food as a way to cope with my feelings since I was 5 years old.I hid under the bed to eat food, and I cherished it in secret. I loved mostly junk food: pizza, soda, ice cream, and breakfast sandwiches (one of my favorites). At my heaviest, I weighed 311 pounds. I tried every diet under the sun, but I was also dealing with mental health issues, including a suicide attempt and bulimia. I first learned about mindfulness when I sought treatment for my mental health—and that's been the key to losing weight. I learned that I'm not thinking rationally when I binge eat. It's about eating as much as I can, as fast as I can. Instead, being mindful about what and how I eat (like thinking about how I chew, or letting ice cubes melt in my mouth), has allowed me to be present while I'm eating. I also stop eating when I’m full. Of course, I also eat healthier foods and exercise more. I set guidelines for myself at … [Read more...] about I Lost 111 Pounds While Eating 3 Meals and 2 Snacks a Day
Lose 5 pounds in a day
I was 5 years old the first time I realized I was overweight, and that my body made me different than other kids. My parents loved me deeply, but they showed that love through food (mostly fast food or anything loaded with cheese and carbs), not realizing how much harm they were actually doing.Still, it wasn't something I thought about a lot until one day in fifth grade during a year-end talent show. One of my classmates was doing a rendition of "Miami" by Will Smith and was looking for girls to be his backup dancers. When I volunteered, he said, “Not to be mean but you’re too big. I’m looking for pretty girls.” I was wrecked. But over the next decade, I tried everything to lose weight but nothing stuck—I'd give up each diet after just a few weeks. I just tried one fad after another, feeling like a failure when I couldn't make them work. When I threw my back out at 24, I knew I couldn't treat my body this way anymore. It happened when I went to pick … [Read more...] about ‘I Lost 140 Pounds Without Ever Stepping Foot In A Gym’

HUFFPOST PERSONAL 04/18/2018 02:05 pm ET Robbie RomuGuest Writer I’ve always been fat. Or, more precisely, I’ve always identified as fat. I was a big kid, larger than most of the kids in my classes for certain, but not what someone would call severely overweight. I was tall for my age and “husky,” and that made me different. Different was not good. To make matters more complicated, I was also gay and that was truly the worst possible kind of “different” I could be. I spent my entire childhood hiding who I was for fear of being found out ― for fear for my life. I grew up in Canada’s Northern Ontario region, in a small town full of ignorant people. Being gay was a dangerous proposition. Eventually, the weight became part of my armor, a shield that I used to keep people at a distance and to keep myself safe. In my late teens and early 20’s, once I had escaped my small town and began the long process of embracing my … [Read more...] about I Thought Losing 70 Pounds Would Bring Me Joy. I Was Wrong.
Brace yourself: The calorie-burning benefits of standing versus sitting will not, at first blush, blow you out of your seat. Spend a minute upright instead of seated, and the additional energy expended amounts to less than one-tenth of a calorie (0.04 of a calorie, to be exact). But a new study that combines the best available research on sitting, standing and energy expenditure invites readers (reclining and otherwise) to consider the potential long-term effects of this seemingly marginal difference. The average American sits for more than seven hours of every day, making us among the most sedentary humans on Earth. But if Homo americanus were to spend six of those hours simply standing on his feet instead, that reformed couch potato would burn an additional 54 calories a day.Without any changes in his diet or a single extra visit to the gym, those 54 calories per day could translate into a loss of about 5.5 pounds of body fat per year for that average American. And since he’s … [Read more...] about This is how many pounds you can lose in a year by standing for six hours a day instead of sitting
