Mums-to-be who take multi-vitamins to boost their baby’s health are wasting their money as most don’t need them, a new study has warned. Pregnant women are bombarded with the message to take expensive multivitamin and mineral supplements to give their baby the best start in life. But they should ignore the marketing hype and focus on improving their diet and only take folic acid and vitamin D as recommended by the NHS. Taking folic acid found in fortified bread is essential to reduce neural tube defects such as anencephaly and spina bifida and is backed by most scientific studies . The evidence for taking Vitamin D was less clear cut but pregnant and breastfeeding mums are urged to take a daily dose of 10µg to ensure their baby’s bones are healthy. A deficiency in key nutrients has been linked to various complications of pregnancy and birth, including pre-eclampsia, restricted foetal growth, neural tube defects, skeletal deformities and low birthweight. Doctors … [Read more...] about Taking multivitamins in pregnancy ‘a waste of time’

Mountaineers captured their waste in biodegradable bags held by portable toilets and pitched it into deep crevasses on the glacier. (Natural News) Big Pharma’s many wrongdoings are well-documented, but most of us focus on the damage they’ve caused to human health. Unfortunately, a new report shows that the environment is also suffering because of their practices – and it’s setting a chain of events in motion that could undo all of the medical progress made in modern times.A survey carried out by the not-for-profit Access to Medicine Foundation found that just eight of the 18 companies questioned said they had set limits regarding how much antibiotic discharge could be released into wastewater. In the survey, which involved Big Pharma names like Novartis, Roche, GSK, and generic drug makers, none of the respondents were willing to disclose how much antibiotic discharge they are releasing into the environment. Moreover, just one respondent revealed the name of its suppliers, which is significant because this makes companies more accountable for the way they treat the environment.According to a … [Read more...] about Big Pharma is polluting the environment as well as your health: Pharma factories leak waste, worsening the superbug problem
The thought of eating “astronaut food” usually conjures up memories of drinking Tang, or scarfing down a few packets of broken up freeze-dried ice cream as a kid. If these memories bring you joy, you may want to click away and read something else. Because science just ruined astronaut food forever.According to Professor Christopher House, scientists are busy working on a new food substitute that could help space travelers on long-haul missions. Though, they may rather die along the way, as the new food is poop. And not just any poop — their own human poop.“We envisioned and tested the concept of simultaneously treating astronauts’ waste with microbes while producing a biomass that is edible either directly or indirectly, depending on safety concerns,” House told The Independent. He went on to explain that the biomass would be — hold your gag reflex — smearable.“It’s a little strange, but the concept would be a little bit like … [Read more...] about The Future of Space Food Is Spreadable Goo Made From Human Waste
