Inverse Relationship Between GPA and Innovative Orientation
Source: Agencia Brasil, Creative Commons Students today are stressed out about grades, more so than ever before. A few months ago I published a post (here) with evidence that this is so for college students. Many students responded to that post with comments about how their parents, teachers, and society in general are telling them that their future depends on getting straight A’s in high school and then again in college. Here is a sample of those comments: • Anything less than an A was unacceptable, and it was ingrained in us early on by our parents that perfection was our only chance for success in this competitive world. •You know what made us think we HAVE to get all A's? The Demise of the “Big Picture Thinker” in Psychology?
In a recent Perspectives on Psychological Science forum on the future of psychology, many senior scholars wrote about their views on the direction of the field. One of the themes that appeared from a few of the scholars was the importance of being a generalist despite the current pressure to become more of a specialist. We need to remember that this is the time in a scientist’s life when, as a newcomer, you can have fresh insights on a field, question the established theories and paradigms, and offer truly field-changing ideas. Instead, with the press to publish early and often we may be implicitly encouraging our students to dive into the status quo and start churning out … [Read more...] about The Demise of the “Big Picture Thinker” in Psychology?
The Quest for a New GPA: GRIT
After publishing a set of case study articles here on Psychology Today on GRIT, I was positively stunned when I saw Purdue University President Mitch Daniels’ recent Washington Post column—"For college admissions, let’s value grit over GPAs." Ultimately Daniels concluded that if the College Board could come up with a new GPA—Grit Potential Assessment—his university would be the first customer. As an academic researcher, author and organizational consultant who has devoted his life to GRIT, and after assessing more than one million individuals in 137 countries, I could not agree more. Mitch Daniels Source: Mitch Daniels image According to Daniels, “discipline, persistence and resilience... [are] characteristics necessary to succeed at the college level (to say nothing of adult life). In the current vernacular, these traits are often collectively called ‘grit.’ Enrollment experts agree on its significance. The problem is in … [Read more...] about The Quest for a New GPA: GRIT
