Story highlights Artificial sweeteners may contribute to weight gain long-term Studies linking artificial sweeteners to cancer have been refuted (CNN)Could the no-calorie sweetener you rely on to replace sugar in your diet actually cause weight gain instead of the weight loss you were expecting? The answer may be yes, according to a new study. "Artificial sweeteners are not risk-free," said Brian Hoffmann, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University, and a lead author of the study. "They are a very controversial topic when it comes to health and nutrition ... but they're so prevalent in society that I think we owe it to ourselves to try and figure out what's actually going on." Hoffmann presented his new research Sunday at the annual Experimental Biology meeting in San Diego. Relying on rats and human cell cultures, his team identified a number of pathways linking artificial sweeteners with … [Read more...] about Can artificial sweeteners cause weight gain?

Sharon Schamberry64, Valley StreamOccupation Retired registered nurse Height 5-foot-4Before 197 pounds, March 2016After 145 pounds, January 2018 Sharon Schamberry, 64, of Valley Stream, knew that normal age-related changes were causing some weight gain but says it was the loss of her husband three years ago that hastened the process. Her husband was Jeff Schamberry, a long-time photo editor at Newsday, who died of pancreatic cancer at age 63. “I was so sad, and I just didn’t care. I would eat a whole pint of ice cream in one sitting,” says Schamberry. “I hated going to the doctor. The first thing they do is put you on the scale, and I was embarrassed.” Between her doctor’s urging and her daughters’ concern for her health, Schamberry decided to return to Weight Watchers after a 12-year break. She went to meetings and used the Weight Watchers smartphone app. She found the social media aspect of the app helpful. Growing up, I was always on the heavier side. I was physically inactive as a child and loved to eat. My weight really ballooned in middle school and high school, and I probably weighed my heaviest around 280 pounds my sophomore year of high school. I would occasionally follow diet and exercise programs and lose a significant amount of weight, but I would always end up gaining everything right back. Then a few years ago, a dear friend and coworker asked me to join her on a walk during our 15-minute work break one day. While on the walk, she told me that she thought I seemed sad and it looked like I was living my life as a spectator on the sidelines rather than a player on the field. Both very accurate observations of my life at the time. She helped me make a plan to start walking with her on our work break every day with the ultimate goal of completing a local 5K in October 2015. Courtesy of Claudia Ramos By cladia ramos as told to Danielle Page Mar 9, 2018 BEFORE: 186I'm not one of those people who's ever hated working out and eating healthy foods. I started running for fun at age 18, and that led to my running half-marathons, a full marathon and eventually two half-Ironmans. Then I got pregnant in 2015, and everything changed. I completely fell out of my fitness routine and stopped training for races. I did no exercise whatsoever—and ate everything within reach. I gained over 50 pounds during the nine months I was pregnant. Then, in July of 2015, one month after my daughter was born, I went clothes shopping. I remember happily choosing outfits to try on at first, since I was shopping for an outfit to wear out with my husband for the first time since Catalina was born. I got to the dressing room, hands full of clothes, and tried on size-10 pants—my normal size pre-pregnancy. They didn't even come close to fitting. I sat down in the … [Read more...] about ‘I Lost 40 Lbs In 5 Months—And Got Back To My Pre-Pregnancy Weight’
My size has always been a part of my story. I never felt ashamed of my weight or pressured to change myself. I loved my body and loved eating good food—I was even a food blogger in New York City. Yet after 14 years in New York, my life turned upside down. I'd just ended a long-term relationship and needed something new, so I decided to make a big change and moved to Greenville, South Carolina. It was a huge risk but immediately I knew it was the right choice for me. It is a charming town, known for its outdoor recreation and active lifestyle. Hiking and biking trails crisscross the city and while I loved this, at over 300 pounds it was, honestly, really difficult for me to do. I realized that while I was happy with my body I wasn't happy with it getting in the way of things I wanted to do. I decided that while I was changing literally everything about my life, maybe it was time to change this too. I deserve to be happy and healthy.
