It took a while, but finally — and with the carefully curated help of Oprah, Big Bird and Goldman Sachs — Apple has at last unveiled a new streaming TV service, its own branded credit card and a news subscription product. The moves have been largely expected and so far don't appear to drastically alter the competitive landscape the way Apple has done with previous products such as the iPhone and the iPad. Still, the announcements represent an important step for the company as it seeks to diversify how it makes money amid declining sales of the iPhone, even if by themselves they are unlikely to turn Apple's big ship either way. But it's a way to keep fans sticking with Apple even when they aren't buying a new iPhone every year. Monday's announcements lacked some key details, such as pricing of the TV service. Here's a rundown on what Apple unveiled — what's good, what's not so good and what we still don't know. THE gift of youth is you think it will last for ever. Then you get old. If you ever stop to think about your future, or your parents’ future, if they are still around, what are your hopes? After a lifetime working, looking after a family and contributing to society, we all hope we will be looked after with dignity and respect in our twilight years. In this country that’s becoming more and more of a pipe dream. A report by Age UK reveals England’s care system is basically broken and lagging behind those in other major Western nations. Our means-tested system — declared “harsh” by the report — sees adults having to pay for their own residential care if their savings or assets are worth more than £23,350. Even those below this threshold usually have to make some sort of contribution. 0 Have your say Competitive childbirth is a qualifying tournament for competitive parenting, the big daddy (or mummy) event of smug middle-class boasting. writes Aidan Smith. What separates football superstars from the likes of me, sclaffing and blootering around my local public park, is the fierce competitive instinct. Well, that and the epic skills deficit but we’ll gloss over this to stand in awe of the winning-is-everything attitude of the guys who play for a living.Take Harry Kane, the England captain. Earlier this year the striker was desperately trying to win the Golden Boot for the most goals scored in the Premier League. So desperate, in fact, that he claimed a strike which patently wasn’t his. He said he got the final, whispery touch on the ball but he hadn’t. Result: ridicule on social media. I laughed, but deep down still admired Kane. Here was that brazenness in trampling all over his rivals which I simply didn’t possess.Well, … [Read more...] about Aidan Smith: Harry Kane just won the cup for competitive childbirth
