A look at the biggest box-office hits and flops of 2018: HIT: "Black Panther": On a budget of $210 million, Ryan Coogler's superhero film — the first to feature a predominantly black cast — grossed more than $700 million domestically (third highest all-time, not accounting for inflation) and $1.3 billion worldwide. It became the first movie to top the weekend box office five times in a row since "Avatar." MISS: "Solo: A Star Wars Story": Not everything Disney did in 2018 was perfect; "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" and "A Wrinkle in Time" also fizzled. But few disappointments were more acutely felt than the extensively retooled Han Solo spinoff directed by Ron Howard after original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were jettisoned. On a production budget of at least $250 million, the heavily promoted spinoff grossed $392.9 million worldwide. It did worse than every previous "Star Wars" film, and the negative reaction from fans and critics forced Disney to … [Read more...] about The Biggest Hits and Misses in Hollywood’s 2018

A PASSENGER jet crashed in Mexico just minutes after taking off in a severe storm on July 31, 2018. The plane came down in a field and burst into flames, yet miraculously, no one died. Here's what we know so far about Aeromexico Flight AM2431. What caused the Mexico plane crash? Although officials say it's too early to speculate exactly what caused the crash, we do know that the plane left Durango International airport in an extreme storm, which forced the pilot to abort take-off. Officials and witnesses differed on whether the plane either fell shortly after take-off or ran off the runway without really gaining altitude. But they agreed the plane was trying to take off during a storm, with some describing marble-sized hail. Durango state governor Jose Aispuro said a gust of wind hit Mexico City-bound flight AM2431 just as it was lifting off the tarmac. He said this caused the jet to lose speed and hit the ground with its left wing, knocking both engines loose. He said the plane … [Read more...] about What caused the Mexico plane crash and what type of aircraft was the Aeromexico flight?

A DIVER died yesterday trying to help the young footballers trapped in a Thai cave – and with him died hopes of an easy rescue for the 12 boys and their coach. Former Thai Navy SEAL Saman Kunan, 37, ran out of oxygen as he returned from delivering air tanks to the flooded cave where the team has now been stranded for two weeks. Officials initially planned to continue delivering supplies to the trapped team for up to four months, until waters dropped sufficiently for them to walk out. But the death of experienced diver Saman, coupled with news that oxygen levels are down to 15 per cent and decreasing in the cave — where the normal level is 21 per cent — has forced the realisation that time is running out. Thai Navy SEAL commander Apakorn Yookongkaew said: “At first we thought we could stay for a long time. Now things have changed. We have a limited time.” Ominously, Navy SEALs also confirmed that getting more oxygen piped in is … [Read more...] about Thai cave rescue – Hero diver’s death, falling oxygen levels and rising water mean time is running out for trapped boys
A SPECTATOR was killed by an out-of-control cyclist as she watched her boyfriend at a mountain biking event, a court has heard. Judith Garrett, 29, was cheering on her boyfriend at Tan y Craig Farm near Llangollen, in Denbighshire, when she was hit on the head and knocked into a tree by a fellow cyclist. Event organiser Michael Marsden, of Lancaster, is charged with failing to conduct the event on August 31, 2014 in such a way that people were not exposed to risk. The British Cycling Federation is accused of failing in its undertaking to supervise the event and sanction the risk assessment while marshal Kevin Duckworth, from Accrington, in Lancashire, is accused of failing to carry out his health and safety duties.
