Source: KCline/iStock The holidays are supposed to be a time of peace, love, and endless cheer. If you are the parent of an ornery tween perhaps, however, you have a different point of view. For some, the holiday season wreaks havoc on daily routines and this can quickly steer holiday cheer toward dread and panic. The anticipation of holiday joy, including good eats and of course presents can actually elevate anxiety for kids who tend to be more sensitive. Do you cringe and hold your breath when it’s time to open the presents because you can’t anticipate your tween’s reaction? Rest assured, while your friends may not want to admit it, many of them are indeed in the same boat. And while you are quick to be embarrassed by attitudes of entitlement resulting in a conclusion that you have spoiled your children, there is another perspective. Tweens are at that vulnerable point where their brains are quickly expanding. Black and white thinking begins to give way to an … [Read more...] about My Tween’s a Holiday Horror!

Here are some simple questions: If you get married, will you get healthier? Will you get happier? Researchers have been studying marriage for more than a half-century, and we have come to believe that they’ve answered those questions with a resounding yes. In an op-ed that was published in the New York Times, I challenged our cherished beliefs about the transformative power of marriage. The best possible studies don’t support the simple fortune-cookie message, “Get married, get healthy.” And the reason we think there is a vast body of research supporting claims that marriage makes us healthier and happier is that there is a vast body of research that has been interpreted as supporting those claims. In fact, though, that research relies heavily on what I will call the “cheater technique” that gives marriage an enormous unfair advantage. When studies are analyzed and reported in such a biased way, it doesn’t matter if there are 10 such studies or … [Read more...] about Marriage: How We Got It So Wrong for So Long
Source: 2 Photo Pots/ Unsplash This year’s wonderful books offer new and uplifting perspectives, deep insights to current problems, and inspiration for positive action in 2020. Here are my favorites. 1. Permission to Feel by Marc Brackett A professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence presents an evidence-based approach to managing our emotions. Brackett makes a persuasive case that our feelings aren’t impediments but provide important information that can change the quality of our lives for the better – when we give ourselves permission to feel. His prescription for healthy children (as well as their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system with the acronym of RULER. The unpacked acronym: Recognizing emotions in oneself and others. Understanding the causes and consequences of emotion. Labeling emotions with precise words. Expressing emotions, taking context and culture into … [Read more...] about My Favorite Psychology Books of 2019

Recently, Priyanka started on the project and posted her make-up look in-between the shots. Her look was totally glam and we are digging this glittery-metallic moment. Priyanka, who is very evidently a fan of bold lip shades, is wearing a stunning deep maroon lip shade in the post and rocking it like a boss. While the first pic in the post will make-up think that that's the only bold thing in the look, a swipe to the left will prove you wrong. The foiled metallic golden eye look that seemed subtle will hit you with full force. The highlighted inner corner of the eyes made her eyes pop and made up for the lack of eyeliner. Perfectly curled and heavily mascaraed eyes framed her eyes. It is an eye look ideal for a party, date night or an evening out … [Read more...] about Here Is How You Can Recreate Priyanka Chopra’s Glam And Bold Make-up Look
Source: Courtesy of Pixabay While many people delight in holiday time, for other people the holidays aren’t all that they are cracked up to be. In fact, the holidays can be a time of loneliness, sadness, disconnection and heightened stress for many people. There are numerous reasons for this including: financial strains that create worry around spending or an inability to buy gifts as one would like; family dynamics, especially in families of origin, where difficult patterns of interaction may play out when everyone gathers together; loss of loved ones that brings up deep sadness or grief around this time; and external and internal pressures to do too much amidst busy lives where people may already feel stretched too thin. To compound this, many people feel that they should be happy around the holidays and if they aren’t, they feel that there is something wrong with them and that they need to get rid of … [Read more...] about A Mindful and Values-Based Approach to Holiday Stress
