Love, relationships, and sex Source: Dreamstime I’ve been known to get sucked into some reality show franchises, but I think I just took things to a whole new level. The latest season of Lifetime’s show, “Married at First Sight” is streaming on Hulu and I spent my Saturday night glued to it. The premise is a simple – a team of experts match two people that meet for the first time on their wedding day, then after six weeks of being married they decide if they want to stay married, or get a divorce . That’s the premise. The aftermath and what unfolds is a myriad of topics involving marriage to address – previous relationships, intimacy , sex , romance, and behaviors, among other things. It is strange that the producers of the show present this concept like it is normal or that it’s utilitarian when trying to find love and a mate when obviously this wildly inappropriate concept, which has experience a fair mount of controversy, begs the question why am I watching … [Read more...] about Lifetimes reality show, “Married at First Sight.”

My Advice After Doing Phone Therapy for 20 Years
Source: Freud's Headset by Paul Joannides If you are a therapist, you might be frustrated that sheltering in place has forced you to do teletherapy instead of seeing patients in your office. That’s how I felt 20 years ago when I first started doing teletherapy. But I wouldn’t have it any other way now. Twenty years ago, I had a thriving private psychoanalytic practice in Los Angeles. Although I am trained as a psychoanalyst, I rarely used a couch and almost always worked with patients face to face. But when my wife’s mother was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, we moved to a different state and everything changed. Lewy body dementia is a cross between dementia and Parkinson’s disease. (Amazon is also streaming the documentary, Billie .) As portrayed by Hari, for some perverted combination of reasons—sexual, racial, political, even aesthetic—Anslinger targeted the brilliant Black jazz singer, Billie Holliday. Anslinger (and J. Edgar Hoover), considered Holliday subversive. (Of course, Hoover felt the same way about Marian Anderson, whose name crops up … [Read more...] about Love Addiction Is the Worst III: The Billie Holliday Story
Impacts of Social Isolation and Stress on Problem Drinking
These are stressful times—for all of us. Many of us are worried about our own health and the health of our friends, our families, and our coworkers. Thousands of Americans are stressed about finances, asking themselves, “Will I be able to pay my rent?” “Can I afford to buy groceries? Diapers? Gas for the car?” People who are used to reporting in person for work may not know what to do with their time at home and are feeling lonely and uninspired. They are getting cabin fever, having had their fill of Netflix and Hulu and the latest YouTube video on their feed. Under stressful circumstances, some may feel the urge to drink—or even participate in virtual cocktail hours with their telecommuting coworkers—when boredom or tension strikes. Turning to alcohol or other drugs during times of stress is a common—but maladaptive—coping mechanism. In a study reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology , there was an almost 25 percent increase in alcohol consumption in the weeks … [Read more...] about Impacts of Social Isolation and Stress on Problem Drinking
