The Critics Choice Awards aired on the CW last night. "Roma" topped off the evening by winning four awards including best picture, foreign-language film, director and cinematography. Though the real takeaway of the evening were the unusual moments - the ties and the no-shows.Glenn Close tied with Lady Gaga for best actress in a movie while Amy Adams tied with Patricia Arquette for best actress in a limited series or TV movie. Adams and Arquette shared the stage, giving one another time to deliver their speeches. Close and Gaga took turns on the stage, with Close delivering her speech first before Gaga was called onto the stage. But the oddest thing of the evening wasn't even the ties. Today the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Critics Associationa (BTJA) announced the nominees for the 24th Annual Critics Choice Awards. "The Favourite," starring Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone, was the Opening Night feature at the Denver Film Festival. It leads all films this year with 14 nominations. "Black Panther" has 12 nominations in a variety of categories, followed by "First Man" with 10.On the TV side, HBO and Netflix lead the networks with 20 nominations each, followed by FX with 16, Amazon with 12 and NBC with 11. The award show, whose nominees and winners are picked by the members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association, released its nominations for the 2019 awards season."The Favourite" leads in the nominations in 14 categories, including Best Picture and Best Director, while "Black Panther" wasn’t too far behind with 12 nominations. "First Man" received 10 nominations while "Mary Poppins Returns," "A Star Is Born," and "Vice" each received nine nominations. Netflix received a Best Picture nomination with "Roma," which received eight nominations altogether. Netflix also received 20 nominations in the TV categories as did HBO. AN Argentine TV channel has used an image of The Simpsons character Apu to announce the arrival of Indian PM Narendra Modi. News station Cronica also used music from Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire as Prime Minister Modi landed in the country ahead of the G20 summit. The controversial channel, known for its outdated humour, also used the headline “Apu arrives” as the image of the cartoon shopkeeper flashed across the screen. Apu, who has been featured on The Simpsons since 1990, is voiced by Hank Azaria – a white actor who uses a heavy Indian accent. In the 2017 documentary The Problem With Apu, comedian Hari Kondabolu accused the character of promoting racial stereotypes.
