Online quizzes are a great way to answer questions like: Which Hogwarts house do you belong in? They are not ideal for answering questions like: What kind of therapeutic protocol should I follow? The best way to answer that question is by consulting a psychotherapist or a psychiatrist. However, this article may prove a helpful, fact-based guide to point you in a good direction. There are two commonalities to the therapies below. Firstly, some tend to forget the "therapy" part of psychedelic therapy. None of the treatments outlined below are solely about the substance. For each, it’s important to have a good relationship with the practitioner administering the substance. Secondly, all of these treatments work by, in some way or another, affecting the neuroplasticity in your brain. “Neuroplasticity” is not the amount of plastic in your neurons but rather something akin to the flexibility of your mind and the ability to transcend fixed routines or patterns of thought. Source: Wikimedia Commons | Nobu Tamura People have long pondered what consciousness actually is. Consciousness seems very different from other biological functions—like some sort of nonmaterial essence within our heads. Thoughts and feelings seem ethereal, untethered from anything physical. Self-awareness seems like a phenomenon utterly divorced from anything that could possibly be produced by cells comprised of physical particles. People used to think of life itself that way too, and many still do. But biologists solved the enigma of what makes things alive mid-way through the twentieth century, the foundations of that understanding having been built over the preceding century. Before that, living things were believed to possess some sort of animating essence that accounted for their difference from inanimate matter. People could not imagine how the same material particles that comprise inanimate matter could be arranged in such a way as to make something alive , without … [Read more...] about What Actually Is Consciousness, and How Did It Evolve?
Popular maxims attest to the pervasive belief that men are always ready and eager to bed almost any woman: Men have only one thing on their minds. Men lust; women want to feel desired. What single word can women say to sexually arouse men? Hello. Chances are you’ve heard one or more of these, which attests to the prevalence of assumptions about rampant male lust. But sexual urgency, the feeling that I need sex now , is age-related. Yes, lust can animate many young men—and many young women and non-binary individuals, too. But a recent study shows that after age 30, men’s desire for sex becomes more nuanced, more complex—and in contrast to the stereotype, more like women’s. The Study A team of largely women Canadian researchers conducted extensive semi-structured interviews with 30 men, ages 30 to 65 (average age 43), all involved in heterosexual relationships for at least 2.5 years. The researchers limited their sample to 30 men for efficiency. A robust … [Read more...] about Do Men Really Burn With Insatiable Lust?
This is the first in a series focused on understanding and supporting children who are highly sensitive (HS) by nature, aka, temperament. Because these children are wired to register their experiences in the world more intensely, they get triggered into stress -mode more quickly. They get overwhelmed by their big emotions which makes them feel out of control. This naturally results in more meltdowns. It also results in children developing all sorts of coping mechanisms to try to gain control of a world that feels like too much to manage a lot of the time. This can lead to a range of challenges that, while not exclusive to HS children, occur more frequently and with greater intensity for them. resilience . These include being: intense and reactive fearful and cautious/ anxious inflexible bossy easily frustrated a perfectionist a sore loser easily slighted (take things more personally) self-conscious very defensive or avoidant when corrected overly … [Read more...] about Is Your Child a Big Reactor? Winding staircase. Source: Monika Pejkovska/Unsplash. In many cultures, there is an embedded association between a person’s perceived “ wisdom ” and their capacity to give sound advice. As the adage goes, “with age comes wisdom.” But as research has shown, the soundness of advice has less to do with the adviser’s age or experience, and more to do with perspective. The “bible of positive psychology ”— Character Strengths and Virtues — identifies perspective as one of 24 key character strengths. By “perspective,” the editors and founders of the field mean one’s ability to weigh different points of view and see the bigger picture without getting caught up in the details. The troubling thing about most advice is that it lacks this crucial perspective. Our brains are wired to find patterns and build stories, so without conscious effort, we will default to the simplest, most familiar answer, which doesn’t make for great advice. Though we tend to focus on the content … [Read more...] about Finding Perspective in the Pause
