How Today’s Fake News Is Different Than in the Past

· May 9, 2020 ·

Fake News Source: Pixabay Although the term "fake news " emerged toward the end of the 19th century, false and distorted news has been a part of media history long before social media. There are tons of examples of false news throughout history. It was used in Nazi Germany to build anti-Semitic enthusiasm. In America during the 1700s and 1800s, rampant racism led to the spreading of false stories about African Americans’ supposed crimes and inferiority to whites, some of which still linger today. In the 1890s, “yellow journalism” or reporting sensational news and rumors as facts, helped lead the United States into the Spanish-American War. Eventually, there was criticism of the lack of journalistic integrity, which lead to the establishment of The New York Times . Shortly after, fake news declined until we saw an increase in web-based false stories and misinformation. As a child, I remember seeing The National Enquirer on the stand, next to snacks, at … [Read more...] about How Today’s Fake News Is Different Than in the Past

Neurodiversity: The Movement

· April 18, 2020 ·

The term neurodiversity was coined by Judy Singer in 1998. A lot has changed in the two decades since that first essay about neurological differences was published in The Atlantic . The neurodiversity movement has burgeoned through grassroots organization among people interested in social change. It's gradually making space for itself in government, research, and education . As Steve Silberman argues in his book Neuro-Tribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity , “Neurodiversity advocates propose that instead of viewing this gift as an error of nature—a puzzle to be solved and eliminated with techniques like prenatal testing and selective abortion—society should regard it as a valuable part of humanity’s genetic legacy while ameliorating aspects of autism that can be profoundly disabling without adequate forms of support.” Philosophically, the neurodiversity movement is based on what we might call cerebral pluralism—the idea that each brain is … [Read more...] about Neurodiversity: The Movement

Accident and Exploration

Fridjof Nansen's ship Fram trapped in Arctic ice while on Polar expedition Source: Print by Fridjof Nansen, by permission from owner George Michelsen Foy The history of scientific discovery affords a gripping view of the back and forth between what we expect to fish out of the unknown, and what is revealed by accident. Contrast, for example, the laborious, directed research that every year results in vaccines tweaked for the latest influenza strain (including Pfizer's and Moderna's Covid-19 jabs), along with the billions unsuccessfully spent trying to create a vaccine for AIDS —versus the many crucial discoveries that have occurred by chance; through a more open, haphazard version of human curiosity. Cases in point: Alexander Fleming's realization that a set of dirty petri dishes, which his lab assistants neglected to put away or clean over a couple of weeks' vacation, had grown a bacteria-killing mold that eventually was called penicillin; the microwave oven, … [Read more...] about Accident and Exploration

Islander Migration and Local-to-Global Change

· February 27, 2021 ·

Our planet is changing rapidly, although society and nature have undergone alterations throughout human history. During these shifts, migration has always been one societal response, driving human expansion and continuing as typical human behaviour today. Waste management problems and coastal engineering in Malé, Maldives. Source: Ilan Kelman Islanders are now experiencing and must address significant changes. In particular, low- lying islands such as Maldives are often suggested as going through catastrophic environmental changes, from local to global, which threaten their existence. In these situations, how prominent should migration be as an option? Historically, long ocean voyages led to island discovery and settlement. Today, diasporas return remittances and temporary migration supports seasonal work, adventure, education , and fun. Meanwhile, many local activities drive interest in migration, from poor waste management increasing pollution to political … [Read more...] about Islander Migration and Local-to-Global Change

The Belief That Trump Is a Messiah Is Rampant and Dangerous

· May 28, 2019 ·

Source: PxHere Psychologists have explained quite a lot about Donald Trump ’s political invincibility and the unconditional allegiance of his followers. One well-supported explanation is that the president keeps his base loyal by keeping them fearful . Through persistent fear -mongering, with messages like, “Illegal immigrants are murderers and rapists,” and “Islam hates us,” Trump gets to play the role of the great protector. But there is another important reason why Trump loyalists do not waver no matter how he behaves or what scandals come to light. For most evangelicals, it is not only fear that keeps them in line, but it is also faith. As a cognitive psychology researcher who has been writing about the science underlying Trump’s support since he began his presidential campaign, I have learned—through comments, emails, and discussion forums—that a significant portion of his supporters literally believe the president was an answer to their prayers. He is regarded … [Read more...] about The Belief That Trump Is a Messiah Is Rampant and Dangerous
