Starting each day with breakfast may help you keep the pounds off through the years, a preliminary study finds. The study, of nearly 350 healthy adults, found that those who usually ate breakfast had smaller waistlines and were less likely to be obese, compared to people who usually skipped breakfast. And over the next dozen years, they gained only one-third the amount of weight that breakfast skippers did. The findings don't prove that morning meals, per se, thwart weight gain, the researchers said. But they do add to evidence that people who eat breakfast tend to weigh less, said Connie Diekman, a registered dietitian who directs university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis. Why, exactly, is not clear, according to Diekman, who was not involved in the study. But based on past research, breakfast fans typically eat more whole grains, vegetables and fruit throughout the day, versus people who skip the morning meal. "Therefore," Diekman said, "their overall food choices … [Read more...] about Breakfast Fans Gain Less Weight: Study

The Rock is in China hyping his newest movie, Rampage, but an international press junket is just another excuse for him to show off his steadfast dedication to the weight room. The man also known as Dwayne Johnson has posted a whole slew of workout pics on Instagram as he promotes the film, keeping his 103 million followers in the gym with him. It is certainly frustrating when we try to stay fit and healthy by getting rid of excess weight, and our bodies rebel against us. "Why do we regain weight after dieting?" is the question that nutrition specialists have been striving to answer, and a new study now offers fresh insights. Recent studies have shown that despite our weight loss efforts, we tend to gain those pounds right back soon after our dieting program comes to an end. Some studies also suggest that the reason why our bodies stubbornly insist on storing excess fat could be due to deep-rooted biological mechanisms. Now, scientists from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, have discovered yet another key player in the complex mechanism of weight maintenance: a protein called carnitine acetyltransferase (Crat). Prof. Zane Andrews and team worked with mice and noticed that the Crat protein — which is also found in the human body — seemed to play a decisive role in regulating the storage of fat in the … [Read more...] about Can’t keep the weight off? Middle school was the first time I can remember actively hating my body. I constantly felt bigger than other girls, and that was when I learned my body was "bad." The girls who were quiet, small, and thin were praised as being beautiful, and I was none of those things. As a result, I started my first diet.By high school, I not only hated my body, but I was also deeply ashamed of it. I saw how people treated me differently because of it—girls made catty comments and boys saw me as a sex object when I was thinner or ignored me when I was heavier. Yet I still kept trying to be the "ideal" woman that society told me I was supposed to be. I don't even remember how many diets I'd done by the time I graduated. College brought new challenges. During my first week of school, I was raped by two men. After the assault, I had a very hard time coping, and one way I managed my feelings was with food. I was caught in a cycle of bingeing, purging, and blaming my "broken" body for … [Read more...] about Why I Regret My Weight-Loss Surgery
BEFORE: 203AFTER: 143Growing up, I didn't have the best eating habits. As a kid, I would get $5 each week for my allowance, and I would ride my bike to the store and buy as much candy as I could. I was sugar obsessed! When I got into junior high school, I would spend my lunch money on horrible food options from vending machines and the cafeteria. French fries and gravy, pizzas, beef jerky sticks, potato chips, you name it. I spent my teenage years overweight, but lost 50 pounds in college because I had to walk everywhere—and I mean everywhere. I didn't have a car and due to a slow bus schedule, I spent a lot of time on my feet walking to my job—50 minutes just one way. After college, I moved across the country to live with my boyfriend (now husband) in 2006, and we moved in together. We would eat out for entertainment, and the weight started to pile on. By the time we got married in 2008, I'd re-gained 15 pounds. Then, it seems like I was faced with tragedy after tragedy: My … [Read more...] about I Lost 60 Pounds On The Ketogenic Diet—Here’s How
