EATING a high-protein diet while trying to lose weight is one the main ways to feel fuller for longer and build muscle mass. Here’s what you should be eating to help shift those pounds faster. What is protein? Proteins are essential for the running of the human body. They are building blocks for body tissue and also serve as a vital fuel source, and are needed to promote the growth and maintenance of the body. Proteins provide the same energy density as carbohydrates. They are essentially polymer chains made up of amino acids which humans need to prevent fatal protein-energy malnutrition. Dietary sources of protein include both animals and plants: meats, dairy products, fish and eggs, as well as grains, legumes and nuts. Vegans can get enough essential amino acids by eating plant proteins. What is protein needed for? Protein should be part of every meal you consume, as it helps towards healthy organs, muscles, skin and hormones. Protein also helps you lose weight and decrease … [Read more...] about What are the healthiest sources of protein for weight loss?
Fibre on low carb diet
Intermittent fasting is currently one of the most talked about eating regimes, thanks in part to Dr Michael Mosley. Six years ago he published the 5.2, a diet under which you rapidly reduce your calorie intake to just 500-600 calories per day on two 'fasting' days and eat normally for the other five. It became very popular. Mosley has just published a new rapid weight loss programme, Fast 800 (Short Books, £8.99), so we caught up with him for the launch to find out how it differs to his previous plans. Part 1: 800 calories per day for at least two weeks The Fast 800 is a three-pronged attack for weight loss. In the initial stage you eat only 800 calories each day for at least two weeks (in some cases longer), he explains, depending on how much weight you want to lose. This time, alongside his book, Mosley has also created the Fast 800 digital lifestyle programme (£99), a 12-week online support plan which allows people to tailor the approach … [Read more...] about Fast 800: Dr Michael Mosley on his new rapid weight loss diet
While everyone has been harping on about the benefits of complex high fat, low carb eating regimes, new research suggests that a much simpler approach might actually be the answer to living longer. In a major new study, conducted over almost 40 years, published in The Lancet, a high-fibre diet was associated with reduced risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and cancer. Dietary sources of fibre include fresh fruit and veg, whole grains, pulses and nuts. Foods like lentils, kidney beans, artichokes and avocados, are particularly rich in fibre, which can aid digestion and prevent constipation, while also making you feel fuller for longer. The review, which was commissioned by the World Health Organization and carried out by researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand, looked at 185 observational studies and 58 clinical trials. It found that people who ate the most fibre had a reduced risk … [Read more...] about 6 simple food swaps for a high-fibre diet
A DESIGNER claims that he owes his life to MAGGOTS after his foot went septic following a suspected insect bite. Matthew Blurton was volunteering in The Gambia, west Africa, last December when he suddenly went down with fever and was unable to stand due to a bite which turned into a blister. The 46-year-old from Doncaster, Yorkshire, was diagnosed with cellulitis and sepsis after his left leg and foot started to swell. He was flown back to the UK where 400 specially-bred maggots were used to eat away at the dead flesh on his foot. "I couldn't look at the photos [of the maggots] to start with. It was strange knowing that that was my foot," he said. "Some of the nurses hadn't seen this treatment before so they were all coming in to have a look at my foot because it was unusual. "I could feel them - it was like a little itch. The maggots moving around was quite a nice feeling. "After two days they had to rinse half of them off because they were going so fast. It was a lot of dead skin … [Read more...] about Man’s rotting foot is treated with MAGGOTS after bug bite triggered flesh-eating bug
HELEN MCGURK digests some sound advice from an Ulster expert in intestinal health How often do you think about your gut? Not that much? Me either, until recently when I had an illuminating digestive health consultation with Susan Magee of Synergy Holistic in Belfast. As a topic, digestive health, with its focus on the baser bodily functions, doesn’t really make for polite after dinner conversation, but our gastrointestinal tract is not only the body’s most under-appreciated organ, but the brain’s most important adviser.Susan Magee, who studied Medicine, but veered towards more complimentary and holistic therapies, is an expert when it comes to nutrition and digestive health, and believes we shouldn’t feel embarrassed talking about it. An informative consultation with her a few weeks ago has made me see how the health of our digestive system has a direct influence on our mental wellbeing and overall health. Indeed, the gut is often referred to as the … [Read more...] about Gut reaction: Our digestive system is key to health and happiness
