PARIS -- Paris authorities are building a permanent security belt around the Eiffel Tower. The renovations seek to protect against terror threats, BBC News reports. The company operating France's most-visited monument said see-through panels are being set up at the north and south ends of the site. Each panel, made from over 6-centimeter thick armored glass, measures nearly 10 feet high and weighs 1.5 tons. In all, 450 glass panels will compose the two walls north and south of the monument. Two graphic grids have been erected on the two other sides of the site and bollards against vehicle ramming attacks will be set up all around. French soldiers and police will keep patrolling outside and inside the area, as they have done since the deadly November 2015 attacks in the French capital. The glass walls being installed allow visitors to admire the views from the nearby Champ-de-Mars gardens to the other side of the Seine River that cuts through Paris. Paris puts finishing touches on Eiffel Tower anti-terror walls
The boosted security measures, under construction since last year, come with France still on high alert after a string of jihadist attacks that have killed more than 240 people since 2015. The new walls, shown to journalists during a site tour on Thursday, are part of security measures that have cost nearly 35 million euros ($40.7 million) and are due to be finished by mid-July. Glass walls measuring 6.5 centimetres (2.5 inches) thick will run along the riverside Quai Branly boulevard as well as the Avenue Gustave Eiffel which separates the tower from a park. The walls, which are bulletproof as well as resistant to vehicle-ramming attacks, are "rock-solid for absolute security", said Bernard Gaudillere, head of the SETE, the company which runs the Eiffel Tower. Paris installs 10ft anti-terror wall around Eiffel Tower using bulletproof glass to protect visitors from attacks
PARIS has installed a 10ft anti-terror wall around the Eiffel Tower using bulletproof glass to protect visitors from potential attacks. The permanent structure, unveiled on Thursday, replaces the old metal fencing with 450 clear panels which are two inches thick and weigh 1.5 tonnes each. The company operating France's most-visited monument says the walls have been put up at the north and south ends of the site to protect visitors from terror attacks. Two graphic grids have been erected on the two other sides of the site and bollards against vehicle ramming attacks will be set up all around. Soldiers and police will keep patrolling outside and inside the area, as they have done since the deadly November 2015 attacks in the French capital. The glass walls allow visitors to admire the views from the nearby Champ-de-Mars gardens to the other side of the Seine River that cuts through Paris. The renovation, which also embellish the gardens beneath the tower, is part of a £261million … [Read more...] about Paris installs 10ft anti-terror wall around Eiffel Tower using bulletproof glass to protect visitors from attacks

Rare dinosaur skeleton sells for €2 million at Eiffel Tower auction
The skeleton of an extremely rare form of dinosaur sold for more than two million euros ($2.3 million) at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Monday. The bones of what scientists believe to be "probably a new species" of the carnivorous allosaurus were discovered during a dig in Wyoming in the United States in 2013. The 150-million-year-old skeleton, which is 70 percent intact, was snapped up by an unnamed French art collector, who promised that the specimen will be lent out to a museum. The buyer "wants it to be on display in a French museum," auctioneer Claude Aguttes told AFP. Photo: AFP The dinosaur, which is more than nine metres (30 feet) long and 2.6 metres high, lived during the late Jurassic period, said Eric Mickeler who works for the Aguttes auction house. He said it was the "only one of its species" to have yet been discovered. Dinosaur expert Eric Geneste had earlier told AFP it was … [Read more...] about Rare dinosaur skeleton sells for €2 million at Eiffel Tower auction
