BRITAIN and Europe could have a Brexit deal within a week, one of the EU's most powerful leaders said tonight. European Council president Donald Tusk predicted the two sides needed "maybe seven days" to reach an agreement in a huge boost for Theresa May. It comes as the PM flies to Brussels tonight, to plead with EU bosses to give her enough time to win round her Cabinet. After a series of phone calls earlier this week, the PM will now hold face-to-face talks with Nato members this evening. She is then expected to gather the Cabinet on Monday or Tuesday to get their blessing for the Brexit deal. Asked if the deal could be done in a week, Mr Tusk told Channel 4 News: "I hope so - but still we need maybe five, maybe six, maybe seven days." Ireland's PM Leo Varadkar was less upbeat, casting doubt on the suggestion that a week would be long enough. And the EU's Brexit envoy Michel Barnier said: "We need more time to work, we need more time." Mrs May pleaded with Angela Merkel and … [Read more...] about Brexit deal set to be done within a week, EU boss Donald Tusk claims as Theresa May flies to Brussels for talks
DONALD Tusk last night savaged Jeremy Hunt over his comparison of the EU to the Soviet Union – calling it “as unwise as it is insulting”. The EU Council chief, who grew up in Poland and was an anti-Communist activist, said the USSR was about “gulags” and the EU is about “freedom and human rights”. He stormed: “I know what I am talking about.” In an angry address he accused British politicians of “wasting time” in the Brexit negotiations by resorting to “emotional arguments”. Mr Hunt sparked fury across the Continent earlier this week when he compared Brussels trying to “punish” Britain to the actions of the Soviet Union. Eastern European politicians were incensed by his remarks, which he later tried to explain were not meant literally. Mr Tusk became the latest to express outrage at the comparison following a meeting with Irish leader Leo Varadkar in Brussels yesterday. He fumed: “In … [Read more...] about Donald Tusk savages Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt for comparing EU to Soviet Union – calling it ‘as unwise as it is insulting’
BRUSSELS boss Donald Tusk ripped into Theresa May today as he piled more pressure on her to chuck Chequers for a Canada-style Brexit deal. In a furious attack the EU Council chief doubled down on his hard-line stance in Salzburg and accused the PM of "wasting time" by throwing around insults. The Pole also raged at Jeremy Hunt over his comparison of the EU to the Soviet Union, branding the foreign secretary's remarks "insulting". Mr Tusk risked also enraging Downing Street by endorsing a Canada style trade deal over its beleaguered Chequers plan, to the delight of Brexiteers. He said: "From the very beginning, the EU offer has been not just a Canada deal, but a Canada plus plus plus deal. "Much further-reaching on trade, on internal security and on foreign policy cooperation." And he added: "This is a true measure of respect. And this offer remains in place. The EU is serious about getting the best possible deal." The EU's Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier suggested last month Britain … [Read more...] about EU’s Donald Tusk piles on more pressure for Theresa May to chuck Chequers for a Canada-style Brexit deal
THERESA May held an olive branch out to EU chief Donald Tusk yesterday – by praising the 80s resistance of the shipyard workers of his Polish hometown. Mr Tusk – who brutally mocked the Prime Minister on Instagram after the Salzburg summit – was an anti-Soviet student leader in the city of Gdansk at the time. His student association became part of the “Solidarity” movement founded when 17,000 shipyard workers stunned the world by going on strike and seized control of the Lenin shipyard. The praise came as the PM used her party conference speech to champion free markets – and credit “ordinary people” for overthrowing the Communist “closed” markets of three decades ago. In a direct attack on Labour and its election slogan, she said it was the “many, not the few” who had chosen free markets to improve their lives. Mrs May said: “Closed markets and command economies were not overthrown by powerful elites, … [Read more...] about Theresa May offers olive branch to EU boss Donald Tusk – by praising the 80s resistance of shipyard workers in his Polish hometown
THE President of the European Council Donald Tusk wants a special summit of EU leaders to discuss Brexit. Tusk said there was still the possibility of the UK leaving the bloc without a deal which would be “catastrophic”. Why has Donald Tusk called for a special EU summit? The Polish politician, 61, has called for European Union leaders to convene for a special summit to discuss the situation over Britain leaving the group as the deadline for talks with the UK nears. Tusk wrote to EU heads on September 17 ahead of a summit in Salzburg, Austria, saying they would discuss the EU’s future relationship with Britain after Brexit and they should also consider holding another summit later in the year with the aim of finalising a withdrawal treaty. No doubt also on the agenda will be Theresa May's Chequers proposal which sets out the UK vision of a future relationship with the EU. The EC head still believes there is a strong possibility Britain could leave the union at the end … [Read more...] about Why has Donald Tusk called for a special EU summit on Brexit and when could it take place?
