Many leaders in this country (and the world) are not doing so well right now. Take political leaders. They are not getting very high marks for how they have dealt with the global pandemic (with a few exceptions, of course; New Zealand, for example). Political leaders have also not seemingly done well in solving international conflicts or addressing issues of poverty and global warming . In many cases, constituents are trying to get rid of their leaders by voting them out (or, in the case of my state, recalling the Governor). How about business leaders? Many companies perform so-so. Yet, CEOs and top-level leaders’ compensation keep going up, seemingly not tied to how well or poorly the company is performing. In short, there’s plenty of failed leadership around. What’s wrong with leadership? In a traditional view, we see leaders at the top of organizations or collectives and we expect them to make the big decisions and engage in the key actions that will get things done. Vidya Balan Looks Red Hot In Satya Paul Saree
Home Insync Life Life oi-Denise By Denise Baptiste | Published: Thursday, February 26, 2015, 10:31 [IST] One look at Vidya Balan and your jaws will drop! The actress was seen in Delhi for a Disney event with her husband looking fabulous. We can proudly say that this is the first time we have seen Vidya Balan looking this beautiful. The attire she choose to wear for the event was indeed mind-blowing. More than the print on the saree, it was the colour which was grand. Vidya Balan was the most beautiful woman at the Disney event. The Satya Paul saree was breath-taking on her. She carried it off perfectly too. The entire red saree on the beauty was embellished with black detailing. At the border of her Satya Paul creation, it was embedded with a little silver shimmer. At first look, it seems to be like a black and red saree, when it is actually navy blue and red. This best look by Vidya Balan was a blessing to the eyes. … [Read more...] about Vidya Balan Looks Red Hot In Satya Paul Saree
Distracted From Life
Source: timurtuchkin/Shutterstock We’re in the middle of another hot, grueling summer, which is inevitably accompanied by tragic reports of children dying in hot cars. If 2017 is typical, about 40 kids will die in hot cars this year. In some cases, parents have intentionally left children in the car while they went off to do something else, but often parents or other caregivers simply forgot that the child was in the car. Already this summer, a hospital CEO, who was supposed to drop her 7-month daughter at the babysitter's on the way to work, discovered the baby’s body in the car that evening. A 5-month-old died in Idaho when the mother’s boyfriend left the child in the vehicle and lost track of time. And a 5-year-old boy in Arkansas died after being left alone in a day-care van. Many people find these events incomprehensible. People accidentally leave their cell phone or glasses in the car, but a child ? It might be possible to dismiss these cases as the actions of … [Read more...] about Distracted From Life
How to Create an Antidepressant Home
Source: Kelly Lacy/Pexels A recent report in Britain suggested that to seriously tackle depression , the country should aim to build an “ antidepressant society.” This would be a society that addresses large societal ills, such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment. This macro analysis, when scaled down, can be applied to our own individual environments, offering a strategy to reduce the effects of toxic stress that so many of us are facing today. While it would be great if we could be the architects of our own destiny, there are obviously limits — our personal histories, biology, life circumstances, and external unpredictable forces such as the shared trauma of the pandemic. We can, however, partially be the architects of our own mood state. There are three domains in which we can make an impact: the physical environment outside of ourselves, the internal environment inside of the self, and the psychological environment of the couple or family of which we are a … [Read more...] about How to Create an Antidepressant Home
A Brief Movie History of Psychiatric Torture
Journalist and film critic Neal Gabler once argued that movies have “conquered reality.” It's a bold thesis, but one of increasing relevance in today’s surreal climate of pseudo-events and fake news . While movie-reality is only part of the entertainment complex, films can influence our perceptions about the way the world operates. For example, villains with facial scarring and female characters playing supporting rather than leading roles reinforce negative stereotypes and make the world harder for many people. Studies have also shown that negative mental hospital portrayals dissuade people from seeking treatment. As part of my research on the cultural history of mental hospitals, I have watched over 250 films. I uncovered so many repeated tropes, that, as Yogi Berra once said, I felt “déjà vu all over again.” I realize I am late for awards season, but I cannot resist offering up my top picks for Worst Asylum Tortures in Film History, by category: Hydrotherapy : In real … [Read more...] about A Brief Movie History of Psychiatric Torture
