Children in Indonesia play on lead smelting dump site in the middle of their village. An important new paper from Dr. Bruce Lanphear, a member of the Pure Earth Leadership Council, and a Commissioner on The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health, reveals that cardiovascular impacts of lead are under-estimated by a factor of 10. While stunning, this revelation did not surprise us here at Pure Earth. Americans are exposed to lead in air, food, water, and from lead hazards in older housing. The study reveals that low-level lead exposure (between 1-5 micrograms of lead per decilitre of blood) increases the risk of premature death, especially from cardiovascular disease. An estimated 200,000 premature deaths from cardiovascular disease may be linked to historical lead exposure in the U.S. Lanphear concludes that lead could be responsible for as much as 18% of all mortalities, or 412,000 deaths. This study is a wake-up call. If the impact on U.S. … [Read more...] about Lead Exposure Linked to 412,000 Deaths in US; On Par With Tobacco
Whenever a mass shooting occurs, a debate about gun violence ensues. An often-cited counter to the point about the United States’ high rates of gun homicides is that people in other countries kill one another at the same rate using different types of weapons. It’s not true. Compared to other countries with similar levels of development or socioeconomic status, the United States has exceptional homicide rates, and it’s driven by gun violence. Related Article UPDATE The first governmental account of nationwide drug deaths shows roughly 64,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2016. AKRON, Ohio — Drug overdose deaths in 2016 most likely exceeded 59,000, the largest annual jump ever recorded in the United States, according to preliminary data compiled by The New York Times. The death count is the latest consequence of an escalating public health crisis: opioid addiction, now made more deadly by an influx of illicitly manufactured fentanyl and similar drugs. Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death among Americans under 50. Although the data is preliminary, the Times’s best estimate is that deaths rose … [Read more...] about Drug Deaths in America Are Rising Faster Than Ever

Question: When the government death squads come for your loved ones, how will you stop them? Anti-gun protesters are, almost without exception, utterly illiterate on the topic of history. If they studied any history at all, they would know that authoritarian regimes seeking to concentrate power always seek to disarm the citizenry first. Once that’s accomplished, government death squads can easily accomplish their task of eliminating all political opponents of the regime in power. Government “death squads” have, throughout history, routinely hunted down and murdered not just individuals … [Read more...] about Question for anti-gun protesters: When the government death squads come for your loved ones, how will you stop them?
